Negotiating salary - ask for a dollar amount raise?
Hey all,
I will be negotiating my salary for a new position with my boss sometime this week. I'm trying to avoid stating what I expect my salary to be so that he can open the floor and lead to a discussion. Best case scenario, he tells me what the company is willing to offer.
Do you think it's acceptable to counter with a dollar amount, and then explain why I deserve the higher payscale?
Re: Negotiating salary - ask for a dollar amount raise?
I've always been a pushover when it comes to asking for raises, but DH always taught me to talk in terms of percentages, maybe opening the discussion to percentage increases might lead to dollars?
Good luck! Bosses scare me...
In all the recent interviews I have had, they always asked me what I expected, hoped for or however it was phrased for salary. They never told me first.
For one of them, they asked what my salary requirement was. I told them between __ and __ but that I was willing to entertain an offer between __ and __ which was $3000 less than what I was hoping for. In the end I was offered $1000 over my "what I will entertain" price with a raise after 3 months. I was also told that I was being paid more than they wanted to but that they thought I was worth it.
It's always worth a shot.
