My boyfriend met my family for the very first time. My dad and his brother are the smartest people I know, but they are also very diplomatic. Before I start debating politics or anything else with them, I make sure I am armed with facts because they are just so extremely knowledgeable. I am also very quiet by nature so when I met my boyfriend?s family, I mostly listened. My boyfriend is the opposite of me; he is outgoing and kind of loud. When he met my family, he was respectful but he also engaged my dad and his brother in a debate about politics. As an outside observer, I could tell that my boyfriend?s arguments were not that strong and my dad was more correct. The debate had ended when my dad switched topics. I kind of found it odd that my boyfriend felt it was appropriate to engage in debate, first, with my dad whom he just met and secondly to debate without knowing the subject you are debating. My dad liked him and did not take offense to anything that he said, but am I wrong to think that he should have been more respectful and trying harder to make a good first impression as opposed to tring to prove his point. I understand that he is not a 20 year old boy, but a 40 year old man, but still?
Re: He met my family
Meh...my BF has also been known to get into debates with people he has just met...he has a few hot-button topics, and if they come up, oh boy, you'd better believe that he'll throw in his two cents. But he does his homework and knows his stuff. He's also relatively outgoing and loud.
Perhaps your BF was nervous, and that was the only way he could think of to make conversation? Debates, when done correctly, should not offend anyone, since they should stick to facts, rather than personal attacks. You seem to be the only one upset by this, so I'd just relax if I were you. I am also very shy and quiet by nature and would not engage in a debate with someone that I had just met, but hey, if my BF wants to, go for it.
