Zipper help!

OK I have a question for my next mini project! :)

I want to cover a large floor cushion and some throw pillows in some fun material for DS - actually the same materials I used for his rag quilt - see my other post! My plan for the big floor cushion/ pillow (32x32in) is to have cotton material on the front and minky on the back.... however I think I need to be able to wash it occasionally so I need to be able to get it on and off... so Im thinking a zipper would be best!

Now Ive never sewn a zipper... and don't really know what to get! So any advice? Would you get a heavy duty one or what? (any links on fabric.com would be great :) And I guess I would put it in along the bottom seem, so one side of the zipper would be on minky and one side on cotton... am I crazy in thinking I can do that? Any advice? I have a zipper foot I think, and I'll be going to a machine orientation class in a couple of weeks... but Id like to get started on this sooner!!

For the smaller ones Im debating about using a zipper again or just doing a big overlap of the back material if that makes any sense....

So any zipper advice!?! :)  TIA!!

Re: Zipper help!

  • I can think of a thousand things I'd rather do than sew a zipper on minky--especially if I was new to sewing zippers.  Have you sewn minky before?

  • Minky is an interesting fabric to sew.  For your first zipper project, I probably wouldn't choose minky.  If you want to use minky, maybe have a button or snap closure--or even just an envelope closure.  If you want a zipper, I'd stick to cottons.  Zippers can be tricky when you are first learning and minky will not make it any easier!

Do you think an envelope closure would work on a large floor cushion? I don't really want to use buttons as it is for DS.... I guess I could try snaps, although Ive never done them either, and I guess they'd be the same as buttons from a safety point? Not that he'd be left alone with them anyway ...
