HOW MANY people are to blame here? I have so many questions.
1. Why was she not reported as a runaway by her grandmother? She was 14 and ran away in the fall of 2010.
2. She wasn't picked up and deported until April 2011. Why did the cops not confirm her identity before contacting ICE?
3. Why did ICE not confirm her identity?
4. Why did she not say something like "oh hey, I lied about my name... let me prove I'm not this person" because I seriously doubt that she had no idea what was going on.
5. Why did the Columbian officials not confirm who she was and just handed her a work permit?
6. Grandma went on FACEBOOK to find her, not the police?
7. The girl had a Facebook, but wanted to be found. Um, what?
8. Why is Columbia holding her knowing that she is not who they think she is? Did she do something there to get herself in trouble and in jail?
There are so many questions and so many people to blame - that a lawsuit is probably a given, but seems so futile. so.many.questions.

9. It's okay to deport minors without contacting their families/embassies/some sort of responsible adult? What happens when they get there?!
10. She is 14 years old. You would think she would know someone's phone # to contact to rescue her. I'm sure she could find a phone somewhere, somehow in Colombia.
All 10 of those questions, plus my dumbfounded look.
I can't... no. That just doesn't make sense. Somehow, that's not the whole story. It just can't be.
To answer #9 - the name that she gave was of a 22 yo girl. So, they didn't think she was a minor.
But that begs a new question - a 14 yo can pass for a 22 yo?
And back to #2, #3, and all of the above - NO ONE THOUGHT IT WAS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM HER IDENTITY?!

The girl was updating her FB status. Her grandmother is on FB.
Um, hello. Sounds like girl doesn't want to be found!!!
Thats my thing - she has a FB, she had ways to communicate. It's not like she was locked away in some filthy prison, never to see the light of day. Columbia is not a horrible place to live. She had several ways to contact people back home, and since April 2011 to tell people in Columbia her story.
She didn't want to be found, and someone is trying to cash in on this. That's how I feel about it.

Yes, trust me. There are some girls wandering around the HS looking older than me. I also have an 8th grade boy with a full mustache and beard.
They did finger print her and take her picture. The finger prints didn't come up in the system and I don't think they had the finger prints for the person whose name she gave.
I'm not saying law enforcement is blameless but she could have spoken up and her grandmother was apparently in contact with her via FB.
the houston article i read said they did finger print her- but it didn't say anything about pictures. ICE did anyways....they just never took the time to confirm her identity:
