weekly book post-first of 2012

Hey girls,

What is everyone reading the first week into 2012?

Re: weekly book post-first of 2012

  • I finished Dashing Through the Snow and started Jinxed by Carol Higgins Clark. I have it thanks to my Secret Santa and it is really good so far.  I can't wait to read more of it tonight.
  • I am reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Leviathan.  Honestly, despite all the hype, I don't really like it.  I am really not into the characters.

WG,WG is on my required reading list this semester for my YA class.

I just finished Marked by Kim Richardson which is book one of a YA series called Soul Guardians. I'm currently a few chapters into the second Hunger Games book.

  • I'm currently reading Beyond Belief: Finding the Strength To Come Back by Josh Hamilton. Josh plays major league baseball for the Texas Rangers. My husband & I had watched a documentary on Josh a couple months ago & found out he wrote a book so my husband wanted it. I got it for him for Christmas & he read it in 2 days lol so I'm reading it now. It's a really good book!

  • I am reading Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. I am about halway through and it has been a pretty good read.

I would seriously love to hear what books are on your book list.  I seem to be hitting a lot of your books but I would be interested to see what else you are covering.  I am trying to read more YA and middle school books since I moved up to teach middle school reading this year.  If it is not too much trouble, would you share?

Not a problem! The other sections of the course also have some interesting books that are required- let me know if you want the link to the pdf of the entire list for all the classes. My books for this semester are as follows:

    1. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Sherman Alexie)
    2. Speak (Laurie Halse Anderson)
    3. Feed (M.T. Anderson)
    4. Pick-Up Game: A full Day of Full Court (Marc Aronson)
    5. Audrey, Wait! (Robin Benway)
    6. Weetzie Bat (F.L. Block)(I didn't care for this one at all)
    7. Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card)
    8. The Chocolate War (Robert Cormier)
    9. Dreamland (Sarah Dessen)
    10. The House of the Scorpian (Nancy Farmer)
    11. Falling Hard: 100 Love Poems by Teens (Betsy Franco)
    12. A Hole in My Life (Jack Gantos)
    13. Annie on My Mind (Nancy Garden)
    14. Will Grayson, Will Grayson
    15. The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton)
    16. Pagan's Crusade (Catherine Jinks)
    17. The First Part Last (Angela Johnson)
    18. Understanding Comics (Scott McCloud)
    19. Monster (Walter Dean Myers)
    20. King Dork (Frank Portman)
    21. I Shall Wear Midnight (Terry Pratchett)
    22. The Forest of Hands and Teeth (Carrie Ryan)
    23. The Catcher in the Rye (JD Salinger)
    24. Stuck in the Middle: 17 Comics from an Unpleasant Age (Ariel Schrag)
    25. Empire State: A Love Story (or Not) -(Jason Shiga)
    26. The Darwin Expedition (Diana Tullson)
    27. Whatcha Mean, What's a Zine? (Watson & Todd)
    28. Impossible (Nancy Werlin)
    29. The Book Thief (Markus Zusak)
The only one's I've read previously are Outsiders, Feed, Monster, Speak. I read Weetzie Bat last month to start reading from this list and I did not like it. Part of the issue for me was the fact that most of the words were capitalized (it seemed like every other word was capitalized, even if it was in the middle of the sentence). I've heard good things about some of these though (for example The Book Thief)

Mel-I'm really disappointed to hear that you aren't enjoying Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I picked it up awhile ago, but I haven't gotten around to reading it, though. I was hoping it would be a good one!

I loved the Sherman Alexie book! It was a fast, entertaining read. Really eye-opening in some regards, too. I think it would be good for reluctant readers. There are some "mature" parts, though, and it's a highly challenged/banned book.

I also loved Feed! It was very interesting, and it's actually kind of freaky because some of the things in the book are somewhat coming true.

I have tried and tried to read The Book Thief, but I just can't get into it. I'm really disappointed in myself because I've heard that it's an amazing book. I will probably give it another shot this summer. I'd love to hear what you think when you finish it.

Have you read The First Part Last yet? It sounds SO familiar, but I can't recall it right now. I either have read it, it's in my classroom library, or it's on my Amazon wish list lol :)

  • my Dh just bought me The Help...I cant wait to start it!!! I finished Water for Elephants last wk EXCELLENT!
  • I'm 3/4 of the way through "The Discovery of Witches". Someone on here suggested it to me and all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!It is SO good sciencey, fantasy-y and a love story thrown in there but not so much that it is boring and enough that I can't put it down. I'm going to be so upset when I finish this book...I feel like I'm one of the characters.

Newstart: Thank you, thank you!  From your list, I have read WG, WG, Monster, The Book Thief, and The Outsiders.  I have Dreamland, Speak, and The House of Scorpions on my list and have been wanting to read them.  I love Sarah Dessen (Dreamland author) books!

Huskerfan: I am going to try to find The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Sherman Alexie) since you liked it!  Keep trying The Book Thief.  It took a LONG time to get into.  I honestly did not start to really love it until the last 100 pages.  But the ending is so worth it!  As for WG, WG, the main characters were boys, some gay and some not.  I just could not get invested in the characters.  I did not care what they did.  But so many people love this book, so maybe you will.

  • We should start a google documents list of books.   Maybe an excel sheet with the book, author, & then who has read it & a simple thumbs up or thumbs down??

I usually glance at this during my lunch hour, and then forget about it until I am looking for something to read :)

I keep track of book recommendations on goodreads.com.  You can set up an account, look up books, and then track whether you have read them, want to read them, or are currently reading them.  You can check out the link in my siggy.  It is addictive and easy!
