Dishwashers

Hi gals, we don't have a dishwasher in our home.  (pfffft lucky we had running water, lol).  Anyway, I ran a load last night at my parents home.  It is a fairly new maytag (I think they got it last summer).  I ran a "normal" load and no fancy heated dry or sanitizing option.  Um. it took 2 hours!  (BTW thank you Navy and Chrishvny for talking me through this last night.....by the time I was done sorting mail and watching the dishwasher, the cycle was over).

How long does your dishwasher take to do a load?  What is the appeal of using a dishwasher?  Do your dishes come out cleaner?  Does it save water? This bumpkin does not get it.

Re: Dishwashers

  • Mine came with the apartment and takes about an hour.  The appeal is that I DO NOT HAVE TO WASH DISHES, haha.  I can't stand washing dishes, even more so now that there are baby bottles, dishes and extra spoons.  I do, however, wish I had a laundry machine.  :(

  • I also don't pay for water, so I'm not aware of how much it actually uses.

  • I couldn't live without a dishwasher honestly. It takes 10 minutes to load (although we usually rinse off dishes if leaving them in the sink to load eventually) and I use mine on quick cycle with one of those cascade with dawn detergent packs, unless doing a larger load. The whole cycle takes maybe 1/2 hour. We don't use the heat dry because I dishwash random things that are plastic a lot. I'm afraid of chemical seepage with plastics. I wouldn't say they come out cleaner, but it's easier in my opinion, especially if having lots of people over with lots of dishes or when we have lots of pots and pans that I don't feel like scrubbing.

  • I haven't timed mine... it's new so I really can't guesstimate b/c I usually run it at night.

I prefer not to use it, but if we didn't have one DH's dishes would always be strewn around the kitchen (He doesn't know that a sponge, soap and water does the same thing), and then I'd have one more thing to nag him about.  It does, however, come in handy when I wash bottles/pump parts on the sterilizing cycle. Honestly, it also comes in handy when we have company so I really shouldn't be talking smack about it behind its back.

  • I wonder if there is something wrong with my parents washer then..... must find manual.  They barely use it but now that there is a full house at casa crazy it seems smarter than paper plates and washing dishes 15 times a day.

  • I am going to time it tonight for you. LOL  we were without one until Aug10 and I couldn't imagine having to do dishes everyday.

And here I thought it was only my husband that was incapable of this. Lol

L I think mine takes 75 min for a regular wash. I do not used heated dry- it uses more energy and they are dry in morning regardless! You may be able to read the manual online or on the may tag website.

  • I think mine takes about 2 hours on the normal cycle with heat dry. It is an energy star fridgiaire (sp). I fing love it and don't know what I would do without it.
  • Since we bought this house, I have been the dishwasher. And I hate it. We are absolutely 100% getting one before the baby is here, even though it will mean replacing the sink cabinet with a smaller one and having to run the electric and plumbing to hook one up. I don't care if it takes 5 hours to clean the dishes, as long as it gets the job done so I don't have to!!

  • I'm an energy guzzling assshole, I guess. I run mine pretty much every day and use the tough scrub/heated dry cycle very often so it takes a looooooong time. It's one of my only luxuries in life! LOL

ETA: My dishwasher was a freaking gamechanger for me. It freed up counter space where I once had a dish drainer and is immeasurably useful when we have people over.

  • My dishwasher also takes about 2 hours.  We don't run it every day, just depends how often we're eating at home.  I like it because it keeps from dishes piling up in the sink, frees counter space because there's less drying, and mostly just because I don't like doing dishes!  I usually run it after dinner and empty it the next day.  Ours is about 2 years old and I think it's an energy saver one.  Our electric bills are pretty low (no clue how bc I'm awful about conserving) so I didn't notice a difference there but our water bill did decrease when we got it so I guess it's better than our old one?
  • Mine takes 90 minutes and heated dry. We have Whirlpool and its 16 months old.
