temptation! ugh! (to steal) :)

We had a fire in our condo in April of 2010.  It was inconvenient, but we didn't lose anything of sentimental value and our insurance took good care of us.  One thing that the insurance had to cover was our HOA deductible for the structural damage to the building.  They charged $10000.  I thought it was only $5k, but the HOA said it was $10k and the insurance company paid it.  The other day, we get a check for $5k in the mail because an audit showed that we really were only supposed to pay the $5k.  James wants to keep it, but I think he's just trying to get under my skin because he knows I would never do that.  It sure is tempting, though.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.

Re: temptation! ugh! (to steal) :)

  • Maybe insurance will let you keep it?
  • That would be amazing.  Things have been pretty tight - thus the temptation.

  • i'd keep it. your insurance premiums probably went up reflecting the 10k. i'd deposit it into your account and not touch it for about a year... then if for some reason the insurance company finds out, you can return it, but until then, it's yours.

  • I totaled my car when I was 16. My dad got a really good deal for it and got it for under KBB.

Insurance cut him a check for KBB pricing, so we made money on me totaling the car. My dad told them he paid below KBB and they said to keep the money. Angel

  • The HOA sent a letter saying that if it was payed for by our insurance company we MUST send the money back to them.  Our insurance company also investigated and tried to get some of their $ back.

    We won't rat you out.

  • Thank you for CLAIMING that you won't rat me out...you'll just do it anonymously...I KNOW!

I am certainly going to call them first to make sure they want it back - just in case ;), but I called earlier and they had a hold time of "more than 10 minutes."

  • We owe just under 7k on our only car payment, only debt besides our mortgage, this 5K would put such a nice dent in it. :)

agreed! i always tell my h that i'm not asking to win the lotto (although it'd be nice), i just want to stumble upon 5k. it's not much, but it's enough to be useful *and* splurge just a little bit.

good luck! i hope the insurance company lets you keep it :)

Sounds like reasonable justification to me.

  • You better return it because if they find out they might sue you or even charge you w/ theft...basically it's stealing $5K from the insurance company.  That's different than when they over pay you for repairs/replacement of car or goods and you pocket it or get a better deal.  Tempting though...
