Lets say you found $1000 in $100 bills in a brown paper bag in the parking lot. It's one of those paid parking lots and there isn't an attendant or a store close by. There's no one around. Literally, no one.

And a visual to get you really thinking about it:

  • I haven't voted yet, I'm still thinking.  But two things:

    - if it was a wallet with a ton of $$ it would be a lot easier to decide because there's a good chance it would help you find the owner.  A bag with cash is at best sketchy, and I wonder if the police would just take it... but what if they are marked bills for drug money!?  My mind goes straight to the movies.

    - a friend and I found $20 in our college library.  We tried to take it to the desk, but they laughed at us, lol.  So we bought ourselves each a Starbucks drink and put the rest in the Salvation Army bucket (it was winter break).

so... I'd probably donate half and keep half...

I'm not familiar with drug money. Do you have to mark bills a certain way when buying drugs? Or is it that they're covered in cocaine? Embarrassed

if it were in a brown paper bg i wouldn't touch it and would never know there was money in it and would never be in this dilemma!! if it were sitting there, in plain view, i'd probably report it to non emergency.

how would I know?!  :P  I feel like they do stuff like that in the movies, which, you know, is totally like real life

  • Who carries that kind of cash in a brown paper bag?

Makes me think it would be drug money or counterfeit and I don't want anything to do with either.

    ugh.  coolness fail.  Crying

  • I'd keep it -- no way to tell whose it is, regardless. But I'm a bit amoral that way.

DH, otoh, would probably call the non-emergency police number and report it and then deliver it there in case someone claimed it. He's a better person than I am. XD

  • I found a $100 bill in the LA airport. I tried to turn it into airport police, and he told me to go away and that he never saw it, lol.

But anything over $100, there's no question that I'd turn it in. And I'm not always a good person :p

This haha.  But $1000 in hundreds is only ten bills...it's super thin, so chances are even if I was in a weird mood and decided to pick up the bag and toss it in a nearby trashcan, I still wouldn't know there was money in it o.O

BUT if it was sitting out, I'd probably look around to really make sure there was nobody around, maybe even hang out in my car for a little bit to see if anyone came by frantically looking for it (depending on if I had somewhere to go or not), and then I would just take it.  I've tried to turn money in before and had the "I didn't see it, don't bother turning it in" talking-to, so...yeah.  Knowing me, I would still feel really guilty, and end up giving most of it away though haha.

  • I would turn it in. Isn't there some rule where if it is left unclaimed for a certain ammount of time they return it back to you? I would feel way to guilty taking it. Now if it was $100 sitting on the street not in a paper bag I would pocket it.

but i think jenn has a point.. if it's in a brown paper bag, i probably wouldn't think anything of it.

I think in the movies they do dye packs or something and banks may do that.  But what they do is (so you'll know when you engage in your next drug deal) is the undercover cop/informant is given money and they record the serial numbers (usually make photo copies), then watch the deal and then arrest the seller, search them and match the money by serial number.  So, unless they suspected that you were involved in a drug deal, no one would know to look or care.
