I have a very serious question.
Do you know how we decide who will be the POTUS? This isn't a yes or no answer, how do we do it?
Stanny, KC, Erin... y'all can't answer.
And GO!

Re: I have a very serious question.
I was reading about this on your Fb. Insane I tell you.
Yes.
ETA: at least you're receiving her prayers because you're so hard to love and all.
I changed my name
We find the most Christian, upstanding, character-exploding, badass guys and one or two minorities in the country, throw their names in a hat and let Joe the Plumber pick a name. Whoever he picks is President and then all the President's friends play dodgeball and cabinet members are picked based on who stays in the game the longest.
Or. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_College_(United_States)
Oh, I like this way. I'd rather like to watch that. It might get more people involved, lol.
This is much better than having them pick a number 1-100 and whoever's closest wins. That's how we do it now, right?
I LOVE DODGEBALL!
I could go into detail about the problems with the Electoral College, Super Delegates vs. Delegates, How Main and Nebraska differ from the other states, faithless electors, etc.
But my degree is in Political Science and I spent a large portion of school researching the EC. I also was a heavy participant in a 3 campus-wide Mock election in 2008.
I'm also interested to know about this person Jilly seems to be referring to!
Warning - it's VERY long

NEWS STATION: Iowa caucuses official returns with 10 pct precincts: Paul 24% Santorum 23% Romney 23% Gingrich 13% Perry 10% Bachmann 6% Huntsman 1%
Ignorant 22 Y/O: How is it determined if we will Have a new president or if Obama ( God forbid) stays in office?
Me - Did you just ask how a president is put into office?
Random Person 2: (Sookie) just what I was thinking! Maybe the educational system in Texas is lacking a bit!
Random Person 1: ?@ 22 Y/O... Are you serious?
Random Person 3:How nasty can you women possibly get? An honest question was asked and you've ridiculed the person. You don't know her, where she's from or anything else. She may be a military wife from overseas or someone with a learning disability for all you know. Shame on you. 22 Y/O, if you would like a serious answer to your question, message me and I will help you to understand how the election process takes place.
Random Person 4: Its also not nice to assume someone has a learning disability and I would think a military wife is just as capable of knowing political procedures as anyone else...just my humble opinion
Me - It's not the Texas educational system. I'm a born and raised Texan who knows how we get a president.
Random Person 5:You took the words right out of my mouth Random Person 3!!
Person 1: She has clearly set herself up as being educated enough to criticize the president, meaning she is not completely ignorant to American politics. Therefore, she should have a very basic knowledge of the election process, which I learned in 5th grade. If not, I am sure that Google can direct her to a host of websites that could instantly educate her.
NEWS STATION: The Iowa caucuses are just the beginning of the presidential campaign. There is a series of caucuses and primary elections in various states. Candidates are awarded delegates in each state who will cast their votes for their candidate at the convention of their party this summer. The nominee is chosen at the convention. Then the GOP and Democratic and other party candidates campaign through the summer and fall. The general election is November 6th, 2012.
Ignorant 22 Y/O: I wasn't asking how a president got elected! I was asking how they determine if Obama stays in office or another president is elected. I never learned this and no one ever taught me! You don't know me at all and have no right to judge me for wanting to learn. Save your hostility for people who don't care about This country!
Random Person 6:I believe when Random Person 3 mentioned military wife from overseas she was trying to say she could be a foreigner new to the U.S. via military. Therefore she really wouldn't understand the American political system.
Random Person 7:What do you mean by "how they determine if Obama stays in office or another president is elected?" It is determined by a presidential election which will take place in November as NEWS STATION explained above. Maybe we don't understand what you are asking?
Random Person 3:Well Amber, if you had actually read my response, I said "She MAY be a military wife FROM OVERSEAS or someone with a learning disability for all you know" No assumptions were made.
Random Person 4: Every 4 yrs there is a presidental election....only way the current pres stays in office is if he is re-elected.
Me - Yeah, that's the same thing honey. You're either ELECTING a President or RE-ELECTING the current one. So you're asking how we get a President. You should maybe watch the news, pick up a paper, you know.. be involved and educated on how our country works.
Me - Even if she's a foreigner, wouldn't it be helpful to her to learn and research how her new country works? If we were in another country, I'd make sure to learn how their government operates.
Ignorant 22 Y/O: @Random Person 3- thank you for standing up for me! The world needs more people like you in it. Just because I'm a little ignorant to politics, doesn't mean I'm a disgrace and completely pathetic. I wonder if you women would speak to me, a person you know nothing about hardly the way you're talking to me infront of God himself... This is why I usually don't concern myself with politics until a couple of years ago. Don't try to hurt me for learning. How un American of you
Me - @22 Y/O, we tell them to pick a number between 1 and 100 and whoever's the closest wins!
Random Person 8:22 Y/O, I don't mean to ridicule you and am proud you are willing to learn but this is something you should have been taught in grade school. This does not mean you are ignorant but it does show the problems we have in our educational system.
Random Person 9:Ya'll are funny ! Here is a video that is pretty simple to understand. Basically they don't just count up the votes and do it simple. Like everything else the government does, it is complicated. This video starts at the point AFTER the republicans and the other parties have picked one candidate each + independents + the democrats who will pick Obama. http://www.commoncraft.com/video/electing-us-president
Me - I feel pretty damn American when supporting my military family and voting in elections because I understand the process. You should be concerned with how our government works! The choices made now will effect the world your child grows up in
Random Person 10:Lol, I can't decide whether this is simple ignorance or the best trolling I've seen in a long time!
Me - I'm having trouble feeling bad for you with having a President you dislike running our country when it's obvious that if we were voting tomorrow, you'd either a) not know the differences between candidates or b) you'd sleep in and not vote and then complain that the one you wanted to win didn't. And I'm a Republican!
Me - I just can't understand how an ADULT can not know how we choose a President. Am I maybe being meaner than necessary? Maybe. But honestly, you cannot seriously think its acceptable that a 22 year old "woman" doesn't know how we elect a President.
Ignorant 22 Y/O: Sookie, go buy yourself a heart! You just LOVE to feel like you're smarter and better than everyone else. I feel very sorry for you. I do watch the news everyday. I don't have cable, so I don't get all the fancy coverage you probably do. My new year resolution was to pray for people that are hard to love instead of fight with them, so I will do just that because I'm the bigger person. I may not know a lot about politics and government because I was never really taught and was raised by a single mom who sheltered me. I never attended college because I couldn't afford it, to further my education that is so lacking to some. I'm done.
Random Person 11: I don't think that these select states should be able to vote on behalf of a entire country.
Random Person 1: Ok, clearly this is a kid playing a game on Facebook. I think we've been punked!!!! lol
Random Person 4: Ok Random Person 3 let me rephrase for ya...its not nice to assume Military Wifes (whom I must say would absolutly know how a president is elected) or people with a learning disability would not know a simple political procedure of how a president is elected and like I said previously thats just my opinion....to each their own, no need to get huffy puffy.
Me - I have a heart. I don't LOVE to feel smarter than everyone else, but I like to feel educated and since you obviously have the Internet I think you have some resources to help you learn. The end.
Ignorant 22 Y/O: ?@Random Person 1, I may be 22 and younger than yourself, but don't call me a " kid". Your behavior was more of a child than mine was. I have been through a great deal in my life and I'm very intligent considering. Think before you speak!
Me - ?*I will not point out the irony in that sentence.*
Random Person 12: Are just going to keep on rambling Sookie? .. ridiculous.
Me - Maybe. Just for you.
Random Person 13: 22 Y/O, I am a social studies teacher who would love to share the electoral process with you! It's more than a popular vote that elects our president. Message me if you would like more details!
Random Person 1: I actually think I was quite kind to you. Your questions and responses truly indicate to me that you are a child. If you are not, then I sincerely apologize. I agree with Sookie. Since you obviously have access to the internet, you should definitely get off of Facebook and move on to some educational sites. You seem to need some help getting started, so I'd like to suggest: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/vote/presidential_elections.shtml
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election
Random Person 1: Additionally, here's a book that looks promising and is under $20. http://www.amazon.com/American-Politics-Beginners-Guide-Oneworld/dp/185168817X
Me - I'll apologize for being rude in my original post, but I don't think you helped yourself any and just made excuses for yourself. I really do hope that you'll take the time to learn about our government and our nation, it's important that our generation is informed because we truly are the future of our country.
Stan -22 Y/O, I'm genuinely curious why you are so horrified that President Obama might stay in office. Can you explain why you feel that way?
"I wasn't asking how a president got elected! I was asking how they determine if Obama stays in office or another president is elected."
This is my favorite part.
Yeah that was awesome.
Between her "you don't know me", "I'm very mature for my age" and "I"ve been through a lot" statements I'd swear she's someone on the TN/TB.
Oh gosh.
That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. So the answer she was looking for was "we have an election in November?"
She didn't seem to be confused about electoral college v. popular vote, which I could see someone with a crappy educational background being confused about, especially post-2000. But really? Not understanding the concept of an election? There's no way that's real.
So, she doesn't know this b/c she didn't go to college? Or b/c she had a single mother? H had a single mother, and I had a single father, but we amazingly both made it through 5th grade.
Also, we started noticing this weird trend that every 4 years, there was a big ol' election. Sometimes people ran in two elections in a row. Reagan won twice, GHWB didn't. Now if only I could use that memory to predict a future pattern...
OMG. I'm pressed for time between briefings, but there's just so much here I can't resist.
"Ignorant 22 Y/O: This is why I usually don't concern myself with politics until a couple of years ago. Don't try to hurt me for learning. How un American of you"
Yeah, it's unAmerican to not understand how or why the president is in office. Furthermore, anyone who's been concerning themselves with politics for even just a "couple years" would comprehend THE PRESIDENT. I recently had a conversation with a young Airman from Florida about the issues in the 2000 election and she had no clue what I was talking about.
Dear Random #4, For being such a smarty pants, you sure don't know how to pluralize the word 'wife'. And no, not all military wives, or even people IN the military, comprehend such basic concepts. Unfortunately, that's why many of them are enlisted in the first place, lack of education and structured environment.
And Sookie, I'm with you. I certainly would not get a green card or Visa for a country that I didn't know jack squat about. Imagine someone like me showing up in Iran, not comprehending their basic social and political structures. I'd be dead in a heartbeat.
Someone should post this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-dIvtxvSsY
Look you flashing your middle school education in everyone's face. Smarty pants.
This has been an entertaining post! As one of those freaky foreign national spouses, I have to agree with this sentiment. Seeing as I plan on living in this country for a while, it behooves me to learn about the political system, even if I don't get to participate in it.
(and, yes, I do know about the electoral college... It seems pretty messed up to me, but it is the way it is... the political system I grew up with might seem wacky to others...)
