Where should we take a family vacation?

We have never been on a family vacation and are planning to take one this summer!  The only problem is we have no idea where to go.  I need ideas of somewhere within a reasonable driving distance that a 4 yr old and 18 mth old would enjoy.  Camping is out but other than that we're flexible to pretty much anything.  Thanks for your ideas!

Re: Where should we take a family vacation?

  • I always tout Glenwood Springs - 3-4 hour drive away and they have the hot springs, a few attractions up the mountain (ride up the gondola), and you can drive to Aspen without too much trouble.  They have some decent B&Bs up there, as well as Hotel Colorado and Hotel Denver.

Maybe Breckenridge?  Estes Park?  I know a few ladies also like Steamboat Springs.

  • Just driving - no flying? My first thought is Rapid City, SD. It's about a 6-7 hour drive and has lots of kid friendly things to do. Second thought is San Diego, but I think that is more of a fly to destination.
  • We are heading to southern CO this summer with a 6 year old, 3 year old, and an infant.  Mesa verde and all that.  When Lucy was 1 we went to the black hills in south Dakota.  That was pretty awesome and great for little kids.  So I would recommend either of those places or yellowstone, that was our other possibility for this summer.

  • I have taken my girls to Mexico since they were very little (C was 4mos old her first time) and I love it.  beach, pools, kids clubs to entertain them while you and hubby have some together time.  It's the best and not to expensive to get to.  Look at stuff like Apple Vacations for all inclusive packages.

  • We did the Glenwood Springs thing this past summer and it was perfect.  We actually stayed in Carbondale (cheaper) for 3 nights and did one day at the Maroon Bells/ Aspen and one day in Glenwood Springs.  Email me if you want more details. :)

  • We did a trip to Durango and DS loved it (at age 2). We rented a small cottage so that we each had separate rooms and some living space, as well as the ability to cook a few dinners. There are lots of cool things to see and do in and around Durango. We didn't ride the train, because it's an all-day thing, but we made sure that we were there at least once when it left town and once when it came back.

The days we were there, there was also an art festival and Oktoberfest, so lots of activity around town too.

We also took a day to get over there and spent some time in Ouray, but came back in one day with lots of stops to burn off some energy.

  • We had a great time in Ouray in June. We've done Aspen in the fall. I think we're going to head to Steamboat Springs this summer, we haven't gone with the kids yet. We've done Glenwood Springs as a day trip or a stop on the way somewhere but haven't spent a lot of time there... we usually hike hanging lake, jump in the hot springs, eat dinner, and head out.
