Relocating to Rhode Island / Mass

Hey All!   My husband and I currently live in North Carolina, but are considering moving back to the northeast this year to be close to the NE Patriots (just kidding... we're moving to be closer to family and friends).

We're planning a trip to explore the RI/MA area this spring sometime, but need to narrow down places that we want to buy a house.  If you guys know of any areas that sound like they would be a good fit, please shout out some recommendations so that I can start my research. Also, feel free to suggest real estate agents (and reason why you recommend them).  Here's a bit about us:

- My family lives in PA, his family lives in NH.
- Both of us work from home, but that might not last forever.. so...
- We want to be within walking distance or short drive/easy parking for a commuter rail to Boston.
- We love hanging out with other families in our neighborhood.  Looking for friendly people and a sense of community.
- We're pushing 30, starting plan for our first child. We won't be able to afford private school, so public school rating is important to us.
- We have a dog, so no condos for us.
- We love being able to walk to local bars, shops, and restaurants, and we go out frequently.
- Convenience of shopping without shopping center traffic.

What a bucket list!  I appreciate all the help!

Re: Relocating to Rhode Island / Mass

  • Well, if you were moving just for the Patriot, I would totally understand ;P

Congrats on your up coming move! I've lived in RI my whole life, all over the state, I think it's a great place. DH & I have some friends that live just over the northern RI border in Mass in North Attleboro. The husbnad commutes to Boston for work every day on the commuter rail, they live in a nice suburban neighborhood. They're son is only 3 so I haven't started hearing about the schools yet, but it's a nice town to look into.

My dream town to move to in RI right now is East Greenwich. There is such an awesome little community there, a great Main Street with lots of little shops, pubs & restaurants on it, plus a big sailing community (a huge plus for me). The taxes are higher than other towns in the state, but you get what you pay for.

When it comes to getting a commuter rail into Boston, what most RI people do is drive over to the Providence or South Attleboro T station (the commuter rail). It's cheap parking, cheap ride, and these stations are no more than half an hour from most places in central/ northern RI. As for southern RI (also BEAUTIFUL) they JUST built a commuter rail station there in Wickford (also a great community to check out), it hasn't opened up soon but I would think this year.

Southern RI has some of the most beautiful areas around. The only downside is you have a little longer drive to get to the other major areas in the state or to Mass. In the summer the traffic sucks because everyone wants to get to the beaches. But it's a small price to pay to live somewhere so pretty. (look in areas like North/ South Kingstown, Narragansett, Exeter, West Greenwich)

I myself live in Coventry. Which is a great location, awesome school system, average taxes, and a pretty cool place to live. Over the past few years the shopping has blown up in certain parts of town, which has led to more traffic in certain areas. But it's centrally located in the state, has areas of the town that are nice and quite, and has a lot to offer. Not to toot my own horn too much, lol. I've lived here for about 4 years.

As far as a real estate agent I can't help you there, but I have been house hunting (for dream houses for when we're ready to buy) for a long time. There are SO MANY good deals out there right now.

    Good Luck!!!

  • Hi! You might like the Bristol area of you are looking to be able to walk to bars an ships. It's is also gorgeous there.

I live in Lincoln and I like that I am 10min from Providence and 10min from the Arrleboro area (DH often takes the train to Boston), 1hr from Boston and 1 hr from Newport (which is very beautiful).

I would think that the Nortbern part of the state would be closer to your family, bit RI isn't so big that it would really matter :)

Im on my phone so I'm sorry if there are typos!

    Good luck!

  • I think most good real estate agents should be able to direct you to areas that will meet your requirements. My family has had good luck with Century21 Crossroads, several different agents. I'm not sure whether they service all of RI though - Century 21 Crossroads

  • I'm in MA....lived in Easton all my life.  Nice town & only about 30 minutes from both Boston and Providence.  Acess to Routes 24, 495, 95 all the major highways.  It's the best of both worlds!  Good luck with your move!

  • Hello!  Good luck with your relocation!  I loved my realtor; her name is Gina Howarth, www.ginawho.com - she helped me both sell my old house and buy my current one.  Even after the transactions were complete, she still helped out when I was looking for contractors for the house.  She's very nice and was great to work with.  If you get in touch with her, tell her that Kristen & Scott sent you.
  • Thank you all for all of the WONDERFUL suggestions!!!   You ladies are great!

Easton is an excellent town with great schools.

In Southern MA, the areas with the best schools will be Dover/Sherborn, Medfield, Westwood, etc, but you'll pay a pretty high premium to get in to those town.

Another great option is Franklin. Affordable, good schools, lots of stuff locally, and easy access to highways.
