Running shoes recs?

I need a new pair.  The pair I have is uncomfortable and ugly.

Thanks!

((Oh and I don't want to spend a ton of $$ either. I save the big bucks for my heels))

Re: Running shoes recs?

  • Depends on the distance and how you run. If you're doing anything over a 5k regularly you should get fitted at a running store to avoid injury. I use Saucony Hurricanes but I'm a serious over pronator. If you are in the 5k area, I love Asics and Nike.

  • I like Asics. Unfortunately, you'll do yourself a big disservice if cuteness is a deciding factor for you.

I agree with the suggestion to get fitted if you plan to run a lot or long distances. That said, you can usually get last years model of basically the same shoes at kohls for significantly cheaper than running store prices.  I also need a stability shoe, so in Asics I look for ones with gray foam on the instep of the shoe (labeled duomax core usually).

  • Cuteness goes out the window here, absolutely. The most important thing is getting a shoe that fits you and your type of stride to help avoid injuries. I went to OKRunner and basically had them pick out the shoes for me based on my foot and pronation. Brooks seem to be good for me so far.
  • Yes, cuteness shouldn't matter when finding the right pair of running shoes. I also went to OKRunner and got fitted for shoes. They aren't all super expensive either. I have high arches and tend to underpronate and I've really liked my Saucony Kinvaras (~$75 at Academy) and my newest pair is Saucony Guides 4 (~$100 at OKRunner)

  • I did not say cuteness was a deciding factor. The pair of shoes I currently wear are five years old and extremely boxy.

Well, you're welcome for the advice, there. Hope you find something you like.

  • I don't run, but get my exercise through long and frequent walks. I finally went to go get fitted at OK Runner this summer and had a great experience. I ended up with some Brooks Adrenaline shoes and I love them. I was embarrassed to go in there and get fitted since I'm not a runner, but it was no big deal and they were able to find something for my specific lifestyle. Highly recommend getting fitted there!

  • Alright, I will head to OKRunner.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • I'm not a runner, just a wannabe, but I really loved Red Coyote over on Classen Curve. I did a running test and they gave me some recommendations.

I also wear Brooks Adrenaline shoes for walking, not running. I'm a serious overpronator, so I need a good stability shoe.

I second this. Okrunner is ok, but a person eyeballs your walking stride and fits you. Red coyote videotapes you running on a treadmill and shows you your stride in comparison to  a 'normal' stride.

I have never heard of this place! I'll have to check that out. That sounds really cool.

I also think Best Feed Forward has some sort of sensor you stand on to determine what sort of shoe you should wear.  I like less subjective solutions Smile

ETA: I think I just tossed a $15 coupon to BFF and I'm 99% sure I'll get another in my race packet this weekend if anyone is interested.

I love them! (And the pair I got are pretty dang cute, IMOWink). I don't remember what they told me about the issues with my stride, but these shoes plus my hip surgery eliminated a lot of the foot pain I was having during my walks. I guess my hip pain was causing me to compensate somehow with my gait, affecting my foot.
