Malawi and Tanzania for 6 months?

DH (myself, and the two kids) may have the opportunity to go to one of these countries on a work detail for 6 months. What are the countries like? Any pro/cons to either of them. Just looking for information from people who've been there.

Re: Malawi and Tanzania for 6 months?

  • Where specifically would you be living? Arusha? Dar? Lilongwe? Blantyre? Zomba?

I spend a lot of time in Tanzania  (I've spent 9+ months there over the past 5 years) and have worked in Malawi for shorter periods of time.

Both countries are very nice. I prefer Tanzania simply because Lilongwe is a really sleepy city and it got a bit boring (but I don't have a family, so you may feel otherwise).

    Are your kids school-aged?

  • I've never been to Tanzania, but I have spent quite a bit of time in Malawi. I agree with Mxolisi, it entirely depends on what area we're talking about. Lilongwe and Blantyre are relatively decent sized commercial centers with a large number of expats. The third largest city, Mzuzu, you're no longer talking about what I would consider to be a city. That's not to be said that it's not livable. I've spent several months there, but most of the non-Malawians there are either aid workers or missionaries. I doubt there'd be a lot for your kids to do and I'm sure there wouldn't be adequate schooling. On the other side of things, I've heard from friends living in Lilongwe that the international primary school there is one of the best in Africa.
