Cape Town- any suggestions/advice welcome

Hello - DH and I are going to Cape Town in a few weeks. My parents are renting a house there and have been several times so they are familiar with the area and are planning our itinerary which is fine with me. We plan on doing the major things like Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope, and we are flying to Durban to do a two night safari, but I'm looking for any other suggestions.

Also, this will by far be my longest plane ride. Any suggestions for that would be great! TIA

Re: Cape Town- any suggestions/advice welcome

  • Funny, H and I leave on Jan 30th for Cape Town. We are renting an apartment on Clifton 1. We are also flying to Durban and going on a few day safari in Hluhluwe.

My father is from SA originally so we are going to meet up with a lot of family and I have been a few times before.

As far as the horrible plane ride, I am going to be taking sleeping pills. I leave out of Los Angeles and go to NY first on the red eye but I am going to try to stay awake for that and then take the sleeping pill for the 15 hour flight to Johannesburg so that I will be awake for the morning arrival.

I am sure you are going to go up the Cable car to the top of Table Mountain. Try to get there right before sunset. It is gorgeous at that time to watch all the lights come on down below.

If you have time to travel up the Garden Route do that. Many people like the town of Hermanus which is about an hour and a half's drive.

Visit the V&A waterfront, Camps Bay and the Clifton Beaches.

Go visit Boulders beach with the penguins, simons town and the beaches on the false bay side where the water is warmer.

Hout Bay and Llandudno  are supposed to be gorgeous.

  • I just got back from Cape Town.  It's gorgeous.  If you will have a car I'd definitely recommend driving up to Chapman's Peak and also along the Garden Route.  Those two drives contain some of the most stunning views I have ever seen in my life.

    Also, Robben Island was interesting.
