I wanted to tell you that we were in Edinburgh for 2 days after Christmas and it was my third time there and I forgot how much I love it there. I told DH I would move there in a heartbeat.

Anyway, we went to Wedgwood for dinner and I highly recommend it if you have not been! It is on the Royal Mile, and it was really one of the best meals we have ever had. We also went to a pub across the street from the Radisson Blu where we stayed (like directly across the street) that was awesome!

Re: PittPurple

  • Oh awesome! I just bought a black dress for no reason at all and I told DH I wanted a fancy night out. Will definitely look at that!

So glad you had fun, I really do love it here, it's such a pretty city. Out of curiosity, I tried to find the pub - was it the Mitre? I've been there on a couple Royal Mile pub crawls :-)

  • It was that one! The food was good!

The weird thing about the restaurant is that we were sitting in the lower floor (request to if you go, it is quieter and more romantic) and there were only probably 6 tables and 3 of them had Americans sitting at them, and one of our servers was either American or Canadian.

Edit - it was not a touristy restaurant at all, which is why the amount of Americans surprised me!

  • There are a ton of Americans in Edinburgh actually. And a lot of Scottish people go away for Hogmanay week (including us!) so the proportion of expats would increase. Pretty much everything in Edinburgh becomes touristy over Christmas since so many Scottish people are in the countryside.

Did you see any of the touristy things or did you just enjoy your kid-free time??

  • I did notice a lot of Americans in general there, and I would think these were probably expats as opposed to tourists, but who knows!

We walked up to the castle but it was closed because of high winds, and the weather was so so bad that we ended up after lunch/drinks and the castle going back to the hotel, watching a movie and taking a nap before dinner! Then the next morning we walked over to Princes Street and did some shopping, and went up to Georges Street (I think?) and went to Jo Malone and The White Company, 2 of my favorite stores that I miss! And then my dh wanted Pizza Express for lunch, one of the few things he misses from the UK, so we did that and then trained it back to N'castle.

Are you guys close to the city centre or do people live more outside the city?

  • Yup, George Street, one of my favourite streets in Edinburgh (much nicer typically - the buses are meant to run up Princes Street!)

We live under 2 miles from Princes Street (from the Pizza Express you would walk straight up the street that isn't the Royal Mile away from town, across a big park and walk for another 10 minutes or so). No car, we walk or take the bus everywhere. Almost all of our friends live in the city centre as well (most of our friends are scientists, no one has kids). It's pretty expensive to buy a flat though so people tend to move outward as they have kids and want a bit more space. I am a city person all the way so we plan to remain renting a flat for as long as possible!

  • I don't blame you! There aren't many places I would move back to in the UK, actually it was only London but I would totally add Edinburgh to the list! I am sure we will be back, it is only an hour and 20 or so from his parents on the train!
