Hotel downtown Playa del Carmen?

We're looking at more options for our May trip. We did Aventura Spa Palace for our honeymoon which is 30 minutes south of Playa. This time we'd like to stay in the town for more things to do. Can anyone recommend somewhere they've stayed? I'd love to stay at one of the condo hotels (El Taj, Maya Villa, Porto Playa, etc) but the cheapest I can find is $180 a night. For $113 a night we can get Mosquito Blue, an adult boutique hotel on 5th. Any suggestions? We're looking for something adult themed, close to the beach and the action. Thanks!

Re: Hotel downtown Playa del Carmen?

  • Do you want AI or not? If not, check out La Tortuga- it's on 14th between 5th Ave and 10th. It's non AI, adults only, free breakfast at the onsite restaurant and 2 for 1 happy hour.Rooms on the smaller side.  It's not on the beach, but they have an arrangement at a beach club (Mamitas) that's about a 10 minute walk away. Great hotel, great service here. We stayed here once, we have also stayed at their sister hotel in Tulum, Cabanas Tulum.

Playa Maya- right on the beach off 8th Street (you literally have to walk on the beach to get in the front door, but the hotel will send guys to bring your luggage across the sand for you). Non AI and non adults only (kids welcome), free breakfast. According to TA, they have the best coconut shrimp in PDC (but since I don't eat them, I wouldn't know). Nice sized rooms, pool, great people and service here. We have stayed here twice.

Playa Palms is another reasonable place on the beach to stay (we haven't stayed here though)

We are going to try and go back in May also. Will probably do a couple nights in PDC and a couple someplace new for us- maybe Akumel or Isla Holbox.

If you want AI, the Royal PDC is the only one I know of right in the area near 5th. There may be others, but this is the only one I've seen.

  • I have not stayed there, but friends have stayed at the Royal PDC and loved it.
  • Ditto PP for La Tortuga.  We loved it there!

  • Thank you very much for the recommendations! La Tortuga is on our list along with several other boutique hotels that are in the $100 range. However now we have another conundrum. We found a 3.5 star all-inclusive on the north end of 5th Ave for only $120 a night. It's the Grand Coco Bay. Reviews are mixed as with all AI's. We're now sortof leaning on just going with this cheap AI because we figure at least we could get some use of it (breakfast, drinks and snacks, at least, and they say the Mexican ala cart restaurant is good). It's a 10 minute walk to the main shopping area of 5th. Has anyone heard of this place? I actually found it just clicking on resorts while looking at PDC on Google Earth- it has a nice-sized grounds with a large pool on the beach.
