Yet another Hawaii post: which Island for the following

We are going to Hawaii for 12 days around the Pro Bowl and visiting Oahu, Big Island and Maui. We want to splurge on a heli tour and renting a convertible but not sure where.

Would you do heli tour on BI overlooking the volcano, etc. or Maui? If we JUST do a heli tour of the volcanos and not actually visit the park are we missing a lot? And if you rec. BI, bonus points if you can rec a place NOT leaving from Hilo (we're staying on the other side of the island).

Would you spend the money for a convertible on Maui, BI or totally skip it? We're leaning towards Maui just cause of the road to Hana trip but very open to other suggestions.

And kinda a random - best place to zip line?

  • I just want to say that we went to the Pro Bowl last year (details in my blog) and make sure you don't miss out on the party the night before! It's in downtown Honolulu with live bands and street vendors... the atmosphere was so exciting! If you got the package with the tailgate party, don't miss it because we got a ton of autographs and all free booze and food. The on-field experience afterward was kind of cool, but most players didn't stop to give autographs.

Thanks. I'm desperate to get B Urlacher to autograph my jersey but have heard a lot of the players don't really mix with fans. Do we need specific tickets to this party or will game day tickets work? By on-field experience do you mean the Sat. morning open practice? We were debating if that was worth going to.

  • We ziplined at Skyline Eco Adventures in Haleakala on Maui and had a blast, I highly recommend it.

As for heli tour, we took one on the BI and saw the volcanoes, which was awesome, but we also toured the park as well.  I personally wouldn't want to miss visiting the actual park, but you don't necessarily have to.  We flew out of Hilo, so sorry I can't help with that.  We did book through Safari helicopters and enjoyed it, so I'm not sure if they have a base on the other side of the island.

I think a convertible on Maui would be incredible, we loved the road to Hana, and I think it would've been really cool to have a convertible for that.

Have fun, I love Hawaii and can't wait to go back!

No, we purchased a package that included flights, hotel, game day tickets, tailgate party passes, and on field experience passes. The tailgate party passes were worth it, but the on-field experience was just being able to be on the sidelines and watch the players walk past you after they left the locker room. I think one or two guys stopped to sign autographs but no one huge. The link to the package isn't pulling up on their website for me to show you... sorry!

If you hang out after the game you can walk down to the very bottom of the stands and basically get the on-field experience, haha.

  • We did a helicopter tour over the volcano on the BI & were pretty impressed. It was expensive (I think $500 for both of us) but I would do it again in a heart beat.  We didn't go to the park so I can't comment on what you may or may not be missing there.

Priceline!  We've been to Maui and Kauai and bid on convertibles both times, had our bids accepted for 50% off the advertised prices online.  I always secure a reservation for a car in advance just in case, booking through the site so I don't have to pre-pay.  Two weeks before my trip, I start bidding daily.  Then, I just cancel my original reservation.

  • Volcanoes National Park is amazing, and I think any trip to the BI without seeing it (on the ground) would be a total waste.

I think the convertible would be better on Maui, particularly if you're doing the Road to Hana.
