Quick NYC travel Question

My H and I are flying into the Newark airport next week, staying 1 night and then flying out of JFK the following morning. It's a really long story as to why I had to book this way, which I won't bore you with but my question is about hotel recs and transportation.

Any inexpensive but decent hotel recs near one of the airports and should we just take a cab to get from Newark to JFK? Also, about how much do you think will the cab ride cost?

TIA!

Re: Quick NYC travel Question

  • I have no idea about hotels, as I never stay in them.  I'd check the travel sites.  As for a cab, according to hopstop.com, (a nice site for figuring out different travel alternatives including how to do various types of public transportation) A cab will cost about $77 plus tolls and airport fees.  It says it will take 2 1/2 hours, around 7am (which seems long to me, but that may include traffic).  That's for a regular yellow cab.  You may want to try a car service.  You can call them and get an idea of cost.

     Some that I've used include

    Dial 7  -212-777-7777

    Carmel 212-666-6666

There are a bunch of other ones, which also came up on hopstop.

  • Same here, I don't know about hotels but as far as car services, ever since moving to Brooklyn we've used Metroline a lot (like 20 times) without any issues. This is their number

    718 388 2222

They'll give you a quote over the phone.

  • Newark and JFK are kind of far apart, and you can get stuck in a TON of traffic.  So, I would probably drive over to JFK after arriving and stay there for the night so you don't have to worry about traffic in the morning (traffic going into NYC from NJ in the morning is NOT something you ever want to experience).  I don't know much about the hotels near JFK but I know there are a bunch and I'm sure you would be fine with any of the "big name" chains.  Also, i agree that a car service is probably better than a yellow cab, because you will get a flat rate.

  • Also if the cabs are too expensive, there are many different bus companies that will take you from Newark into NYC inexpensively - I've never taken any but I always hear them advertised.  Then you can take the Air Train to JFK (I think you'll  need to take the subway to Jamaica first - Hopstop.com can help you with that).
