What should I read?

OK I'm going on vacation and need to get a couple of books for the kindle.  What are your suggestions?  (tropical vacation)

Re: What should I read?

  • What kind of books do you like to read?
  • I don't know how to describe what I like (I realize how stupid that sounds).  My favorite authors are Jodi Piccout and Joy Fielding (I've read or have hard copies of most of their books.  I also like mystery type stuff.
  • I know I was touting it all summer, but have you read Sue Grafton's alphabet books? A is for Alibi, etc? I think she's up to U now - I really enjoy those.

I always go for fluffy romance novels to fill in when I am tired of reading heavier stuff.

Have you read anything lately that you really loved? That might help me pick other books...

V, actually. I'm reading it now. I love her, but the books don't last long enough.

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns
  • I just checked A is for Alibi and One for the Money out of the library, but haven't started them yet.  I also need to finish up the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy.

Have you read anything by Jennifer Weiner?  They're easy reads, but have a bit more substance than the rest of the chick lit genre.

    This is my siggy.

I know, right? I think I made it to N before I had to take a break - I was reading two a week! I have been reading books for yoga, romance novels, and books for book club, so once yoga teacher training ends I'll have time to go back to Kinsey!

  • Don't worry, BBE. She still has that darn black dress that she swears is good for all occasions, but I am certain is appropriate for none. I think that someone should do a fashion intervention between now and Z.

Seriously, she needs a makeover like whoa. I take less offense to the dress and more offense to the turtleneck-jeans-sneakers uniform. GAG. Please tell me she loses that in later books?

  • East of the Sun.  Its one of my favorite books I read last year.

My mom always told me, when you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. My lips are sealed.

  • Carl Hiassen - Skinny Dip -  Funny, Mystery, and tropical.

I don't do romance novels.  The last 2 books I've read (or am reading) are Jodi Piccoult.  I am bringing another of hers on the trip so thought I'd look for something else for the kindle.

  • Get the Sookie Stackhouse series if you haven't yet.  It's pretty much crime novel veneered with vampires and lots of sex... quick, brainless reads, but really entertaining.  They were cheap on my nook up until the last couple, but there are like, 12 or something in the series now.

  • What other authors do you like?

Have you tried John Irving, Margaret Atwood, Tom Robbins?

  • Have you read (and liked) Dan Brown? (The DaVinci Code, Angels & Demons, etc) If so, try Steve Berry - very similar to Dan Brown but he has way more books published and I like his main character better than Robert Langdon.

Haven't read any of those, will check them out.

I read Angels and Demons but not DaVinci code (it's been sitting at my house for like a year!).  I'll check Steve Berry out.

They aren't sneakers, they're Sauconys. And you call yourself a fan.

    Pfft. Confused

Have you read anything by Michael Connelly? I just finished the first in the Harry Bosch series, called The Black Echo.

  • I like Jo Nesbo's crime/suspense books with detective Harry Hole. My favorite has been the Snowman, but the Leopard is pretty good. They are kind of in a series, but you don't need to read the earlier books because there's enough background provided to pick up the history.
  • Jo Nesbo is fantastic!  Ditto, doglove.

Steig Larsson's books are outstanding, as well.

    And Skinny Dip.

The Lincoln Lawyer is also a good book.

You guys are speaking my mystery novel language!  Also if you're looking for a long mystery/crime series, the Kay Scarpetta (sp?) novels are pretty good as well. And you don't necessarily need to read them in order.

For flimsy chick lit, maybe Jane Green.  She's British and has some good ones.

I have Lincoln Lawyer on my kindle already.  I was a little worried I wouldn't like it because I saw the movie first.

I like the Kay Scarpetta books, too. I think they are by Patrcia Cornwell? I wasn't able to get into the Skinny Dip books, though.

  • Mary Kay Andrews has some cute, chick-lit books.  They're pretty mindless, great for vacation reads.
Until you are happy with who you are, you will never be happy with what you have.
  • I'm reading the Game of Thrones series right now.  I don't know how to describe it,  it's mostly medieval drama with just the right amount of fantasy thrown in.  He alternates each chapter between the POV of various characters in the novel.  I find it intensely gripping, and the books are long.  I bought a four pack on my nook, so all I know is I just started the third book and put about 1700 pages into the series, so it will keep you busy for a while.

I think the one I'm reading right now is her new one "Sing You Home"?
