New bathtub from HeII

So the previous owners apparently painted over the green (yes, mint green) bathtub before we bought the house.  The paint started flaking off so we ended up replacing the whole tub (and walls) the last 2 days.  The tub itself turned out great, but the process was a nightmare (when is it not?).

First, we had this scheduled to be done in December.  But the tech's mom ended up in the hospital so they needed to reschedule.  Ok, no big deal, family emergencies come up and we didn't fault them for that.  So they rescheduled for that weekend.  Well, they called Saturday morning and ended up not coming out (I forget what the reason was).  He said he would be out Sunday.  Sunday rolls around and he calls to say his truck is broken and he'll be out as soon as he gets it fixed.  He finally showed up at 3, only for us to learn the materials he needed for us (white) weren't in yet. 

So I called the office on Monday, and the owner kind of laughed.  We ended up rescheduling for this week.  I called on Monday to verify he would be here on Tuesday and that he had the correct materials.  He did.

He showed up, gets all his stuff out and set up, and then tells me he needs to run to Home Depot.  Luckily we are about a mile from Home Depot.  He ended up going there 3 times on the first day.  And, every time he walked in or out of the house, he left the door open a few inches.  Luckily it wasn't super cold, but we have 2 indoor cats, one of whom is really curious about open doors.  It even bothered DD, because everytime she noticed the door she would make a comment and then close it.  Other than that, the first day was pretty uneventful.

Yesterday, he arrived on time again, got all his stuff set up, and told me he would be right back.  I assume he went to Home Depot but I have no idea.  He was a little better about closing the door all the way at the start of the day, but by the end of the day he was leaving it open again.  Then around 2 he left, because he was missing a part for the shower head, and it took him 2 hours to get back.  At that point he was almost done. 

Then he was doing something in the basement.  Whatever he was doing, he knocked the pipe that runs hot water from the wall to the washing machine and it broke, spraying water everywhere.  He turned off the water to the whole house to get it to stop.  He comes back upstairs and finishes the tub and starts cleaning up.  Then he asks me if I have someone on their way to fix the pipe.  I told him no (at this point I think just the pipe is turned off, I hadn't realized all our water was off) because I had somewhere I needed to be.  Then I figured out that all the water was off and he was just going to leave us like that.  So I called the owner of the company and explained the situation.  So then he comes back in and asks if I have someone who I can call to fix it or do I want him to fix it.  I told him he needed to fix it.  He asked how soon (really???), I said ASAP.  So he went down to see what he needed and then went to Home Depot to get the supplies.  He came back and fixed it and turned the water back on.  Before he left I ran the washer to make sure it didn't leak, and he checked the drain on the tub.  All is fine now.

Bottom line, the tub is great, he did a really great job there.  But there were a lot of small things (constantly rescheduling, showing up without the correct materials, leaving the door open) that went wrong.  And of course the big thing, breaking my pipe and then thinking it was ok to leave without fixing it and leave us without water.

So glad that's done!

  • this is why I'm hesitant to hire anyone to do anything. yikes. did they charge you for labor or anything to fix the pipe? I can't believe he was just going to leave it that way.
  • No, he didn't charge any extra.  Oh, but that reminds me.  When the owner was out and we were picking out all the fixtures and stuff, I picked out a handle (I have arthritis and need something to hold onto getting in and out).  Well he apparently left that off the contract.  So the tech tells me it's normally $125 but he can give it to me for $75.  So I had to call the owner and straighten that out as well.  So we were never charged anything extra, but it was not the smoothest process.

  • That sounds like an ordeal.  Our CO house also had a painted tub/tile...and we ended up gutting the whole bathroom to deal with it - lesson learned.
