Am I dreaming? (Italy tickets)

So as most of you know I cannot for the life of me decide our big trip this year.  I have been looking at flights to Italy probably off and on about three years.  This morning I was looking on kayak for almost every month this year and they are all about over 1200, which I think is fairly consistent as long as I have looked.  This is a bummer, in the last three years I have not paid over 750 to get to Europe.  Should I expect this for Italy?  And if you do not mind sharing...what did you pay that you felt was reasonable?

Re: Am I dreaming? (Italy tickets)

  • SIL/her husband went to Italy in May 2011.  They watched tickets forever and they too were at $1200 on average.  Once tickets dropped to $1100, they booked.  They flew ORD to LHR to FCO.

Depending on your origin, $1200 seems about right for average current pricing.

  • which airline? from where to where? which time of year? which days?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Where are you flying from? I've seen a lot of flights to Rome from major US hubs that are down around $800-900 with a few fares around $750. Even from the East Coast, I wouldn't expect to see much less than $750 unless there was a special sale going on.

Check mid-week flights in low-season months like February/March and September/October. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in those months are usually when I see the lowest airfares of the year.

  • We have been shopping for flights to Italy for this summer, and found the same thing....ours are over $1300!
  • We're flying into Milan, out of Venice this year (late May/early June) for 1600pp.  The lowest I saw to either airport was about 1200pp but because of date/time/number of seats ours ended up being even more expensive.
  • Yeah, I've been watching Italy tickets like crazy (Fly to Venice, Leave from Rome) for the past few months. The cheapest I've seen so far is what they are now... almost $1300 per person out of Boston for my dates in the summer. Bahhh. It if you score cheap tixs let us know!
  • This past summer we (me + H + not yet 2 year old toddler) flew into Geneva and out of Rome (20 day trip).  We paid $3600.  Times have changed.  It's expensive to get to Europe, especially in the summer.
  • for my trip in 3 weeks i paid about 800 a person jfk non stop to rome alitalia, then florence through paris then non-stop to jfk as i REFUSE to fly out of or have a connection in FCO ever again and we'll be in florence anyway. we leave and come back on wednesdays.

but that's the off season. during the high season they're much more.

  • We are flying from Chicago into Venice and out of Rome this June.  With one stop each way, we paid $1700pp.  I've seen it as low as $1400-ish since then, but I usually anticipate about $1500 for Europe in the summer.
  • My BFF is here now (PHL direct to FCO)-- $680.  Of course, it's the off-season.

The last time I went back (NAP to DCA) it was abt $800 (that was May '11).  I should note that was with a Munich xfer.  But Munich's an easy xfer-- I would STRONGLY recommend a Munich xfer over either Rome or, God forbid (seriously), Milan.

  • There are so many variables, it's hard to say what an average is.  We just went to Europe in October, but we got a multicity ticket (flew into Munich and out of Rome) and we paid about $875 each (from JAX airport, layover in Atlanta).

haha... Yeah, I've been through Rome's airport 3 times and this last time was the worst.   Not a fan.

Just a thought...maybe the Olympics in London are a factor in ticket prices.  We were going to go to London and planned to fly into or out of either Paris, Italy or Ireland.  We figured we may as well see more of Europe if we are going to make the trip there.

i'm not a fan either. been through 6 times (some connections, some departing some arriving) and the only one that wasn't a disaster was the arriving and just leaving the airport. the others make me feel nauseous just thinking about them....

Ditto.  And that's with two layovers, coming from Detroit.  Flying into Rome, out of Venice.  With the cost of fuel and the high percentage of the ticket price that is just taxes, I just don't think that tickets are going to get much cheaper.  I think the only way to get a "deal" is to go during off season.
