Reposted from May2012 board... but OBV i need your opinions as well! plus i think you ladies "know me" a bit better than that board too! THanks!
so I can't stop smiling cuz we arbitrarily picked out a boys name while joking around. I think. we both said it was our final answer...
Hurricane J H***** (2 syllable last name)
Nickname - Cane
Background -- my degree is in meteorology and i do love the weather. we found out the day before Hurricane Irene (such a LONG SOBER day lol - after DH bought 2 cases of beer for us to work on...). I have a tattoo on my foot that's a Honu (sea turtle) with the hurricane symbol on the shell. His grandfather is a John/Jack and my dad is a John but we don't like the name John but I think just J will work. lol - plus - doh! Homer J Simpson! haha kidding, that didn't really factor in til after.
We were looking for a name that is originial yet not too crazy. and i feel like it flows with our last name.
What do you think? LOL i need your input as we don't want to share the actual names with anyone until birth!
side note - baby is kicking away right now! IF it's a he (team green), i think he likes it!
TIA!
Re: Boy Name?! What do you think?
For my taste, it's a little too..... I don't know the word but I think you know what I mean??
BUT I love the story behind it. I actually really love the name Cane - have you considered just naming "him" Cane, and knowing that it has the same meaning. I know he would go by that anyway, but I always felt bad for the kid that had a really weird name on the first day of school and had to go *ahem* it's [insert nickname] while the other kids giggled. Not like anyone would be giggling at Hurricane with all the Storms and Rains, etc. out there, but you get my point.
Ultimately you should do what you and DH loves though - just my opinion!
I think I would never get Jeff to go for it, but I don't hate it. At all. I think the reasoning behind it is cute. It is definitely different. I think if you both like it, who is to say otherwise! : )
Not sure what, if any, religion you practice, but I don't think I could get anyone in my family on board with simply "Cane" because of the whole Cain & Abel thing. But, as a nickname I think it is perfectly fine!

Rachel took the words right out of my mouth.
IMO, though I think you have the strength of personality to pull that one off, I too think it might be too much for a little one to navigate through grade school with. Cane is cool, and the name would have an interesting backstory.

If you want my honest opinion....NO. But I happen to be VERY traditional with name choices. It's a cool story, and I like Cane like the other ladies said. And ditto about the middle name (good point, Marick). Maybe a more solid middle name will give him a choice to go by that name instead? It's a cool story...but...no. (Don't be mad at me, I'm just being honest because I heart you)
lol - i'm not mad at any of you! LOL i did ask for your opinions and know it's a pretty much off the wall name. we DO like it and if it is a boy (at this point - 3 1/2 months out) there is a good chance that will be his name. we do like to be different and I know this could be a good name for us. (uh - ps - this naming thing is HARD!)
I do like the feedback - Cane - something to think about.
i did ask my bff and her response was - "are you serious?" hahahaha BUT then she proceeded to say she'll love my baby no matter what she has to call him/her. i think that's how most people who "count" will feel!
thanks ladies! and trust me no hard feelings!!! love the feedback!!! : )

And Holly, if baby is a he and you go for it and name him Hurricane J, I will give you mad props for originality! There will be times, I'm sure, when he'll be rockin the name, and other times when he might rather go as H, or by a middle name. While I absolutely adore the name Milo, and it works well as a child's name, we chose Sebastian as a middle name partly so that he could go by M. Sebastian if for some reason he didn't like going by Milo later on.

Along with what your friend said, our good friend has a son named Krae (cray), and when we first heard that we were like WHAT? Now it isn't anything but his name. We don't even thing about it anymore...although, I still call him my initial reaction, "Like a crayfish?"...so, he is my little Krae Fish! : )
I did that to another friend's kid, too. His name was Dillon (normal enough), and I started calling him Dill Pickle. Everyone calls him Pickle now! Haha!!!
Awwww! LOL! That's cute! Both of them.
When my friend had her son Devin, one of the other girls in our group said it reminded her of Deviled Eggs. So every time we'd start talking about family stuff and she'd bring up Devin, the other girl would whisper to me, "Deviled Eggs."
In the Philadelphia area there's a well known, very dorky weatherman named Glen "Hurricane" Shwarz, so that's the first thing I think of. I'm a fan of traditional names for first names and giving more of a funky middle name - maybe Hurricane can be the middle name?
Also, by coincidence DH's middle name is just the initial J (both of his grandfathers had J names) and he hates it. Every time he has to give his full name to someone he has to explain why it's just one letter. Just something to think about...
