San Diego neighborhoods?

I'm looking to rent a condo on VRBO but don't know San Diego at all.  We'll be going the first week in August with 3 kids (6 and 1.5 year old twins) and my parents.  We'll want to spend lots of time on the beach and also do Sea World and probably Legoland.

Any suggestions?

So far I'm looking at La Jolla and Carlsbad.

Re: San Diego neighborhoods?

  • We just spent Christmas in Carlsbad and loved it, but if you want to be more central I'd choose La Jolla.

  • I would rent one in Carlsbad and rent a car. I personally feel that the restaurants in Carlsbad are much more kid friendly than some of the restaurants in La Jolla. I lived in Carlsbad for 5 years and have a 3 year old (we just moved up to Dana Point in Feburary of last year) so I know what I'm talking about.  Wink I would also look into Encinitas, Solana Beach, Cardiff and Oceanside. All of these are beach towns that have unique and fun downtown areas to visit with good beaches. If you are looking at a condo in a particular area PM me and I can let you know what there is to do and eat in the immediate area that is kid friendly.

Sea World and Legoland are definately worth the visit, even for the twins. We have had a Legoland membership since my son was a year old and he loves it. They have play areas for the smaller kids that are really fun and interactive. Legoland has a few water play areas outside of the waterpark and it can get warm at times so make sure you bring an extra change of clothes for everyone. The aquarium at Legoland is nice because everything is on the kids level but it is smaller and we can usually get through it in an hour. If your kids have been to an aquarium before and buying the extra ticket to visit it is an issue, I would skip it.

As far as Sea World goes try to plan your visit on a cloudy or foggy day if possible. All of the shows are in huge concrete stadiums with metal benches and it is hot, hot, hot! Make sure you have hats for the little ones and bring lots of sunscreen and water. I think the first Shamu show is around 11:00. The park opens around 9. I would get there early and get Shamu done and then go around the park from there as the stadium gets hotter as the day progresses. The Sesame Street themed water play area is a ton of fun and a good way for the kids to cool off. So bring their swimsuits or a change of clothes and let them run around while you cool off.

If you have time the San Diego Zoo is great too as is Balboa Park.

That's more than you asked for but I miss Carlsbad soo much. It's a great place for kids!

  • I think both posters have given super excellent advice.  I would just say that as much as I love North County, Oceanside may be a little too far north.   Plus Carlsbad also has the Museum of Making Music which would be fun for the kids and during the summer they have free Friday night concerts at the parks.

  • Thanks so much for the info, ladies!  I didn't know Sea World or Legoland had water park areas, so thanks for the heads up.  We would have been caught without our suits!  The museum of making music sounds awesome too.  I found a place I like in Carlsbad, but it may be booked, so I may have to keep looking. This gives me some more ideas.
