Costa Rica/ Belize

I know I have seen posts on here before about these destinations. A group of friends and I are planning a trip. Originally, it was just Belize, specifically, Ambergris Caye. But I would really like to try Costa Rica instead, but where? We would be looking for beach, excursions, nightlife, a town with some stuff to do (restaurants/ shopping/ etc.) We are flexible on accommodation type. Where would fit the bill?

Re: Costa Rica/ Belize

  • My H and I went to CR for our honeymoon last year and had a great time.

We stayed in Manuel Antonio for the first part of the trip at Arenas del Mar.  The beaches were gorgeous with rainforest meeting the shoreline and monkeys, sloths, and lizards everywhere.  We mostly just relaxed on the beach, toured and hiked in MA National Park one day, and went out for dinner and drinks at various restaurants and bars in the evening.

For the second part of the trip we stayed at Arenal Nayara (mostly a couples' resort and I wouldn't rec. it anyway) in La Fortuna, Arenal.  We did a lot of excursions here including Arenal Hanging Bridges, volcano hike, Sky Trek ziplining, hiked to and swam in La Fortuna waterfall, and visited Tabacon hot springs one night.  We had a blast especially with the ziplining (it's a must-do!) and the hanging bridges were fun.  Although it's not a guarantee, seeing/hearing/feeling the volcano erupt with red lava was awesome.  There are a few other activities that I wish we'd had time for also like white water rafting and waterfall rappelling.

Arenal seems to have more excursions and MA is more laid back.  These were great areas for seeing wildlife, relaxing, and doing activities but in terms of nightlife and shopping, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for.  You may also want to look into resorts in the Guanacaste/North Pacific, but I don't know much about that area.

    HTH!

  • I think  i loved beliza a lot more than cr.

  • If one of your primary goals is a beach vacation, I wouldn't recommend Costa Rica.  I absolutely loved Costa Rica, but my favorite parts were the interior of the country (rainforest, volcanoes, etc.)
