If you could..
Travel to any place you pick, where would you go and why? We were given a trip of our choice. The only rules are that we can't go to any place we have been before and must go during the 2012 calendar year. We have 3 kids, ages 14, 10, and 4 so someplace that is also going to be fun for kids.

What type of things do you want to do / see? Beaches? Nature? City? Culture? How long would you be going for and where would you be leaving from? Do you have any sort of budget you're working with (for example, even if the trip is paid for, are you covering incidentals)?
And, since one of the requirements is that you can't go to a place you've been before... where have you been? Let's start there and then I'll be happy to offer up several recommendations.

We really love beaches and anything coastal. We have been to both coasts of the US such as the Outer Banks, Coronado, and also been to Hawaii twice, and most recent trip was to Lake Powell to stay on a house boat. The only trip we have taken out of the US is to Necker Island, and while there we also toured the area islands. My oldest has traveled to England and some of the area, but that was a few years back and since the whole family didn't go that is a possibility. Africa is also out because that is a future trip once my youngest is older.
The trip is paid for, but we are planning on paying for some of the extras that I know will come about.
I would really love to take a beach related trip because that is what we like, but I would also like to have some new experiences and travel outside of the US. Ireland comes to mind, but I don't know how it would be with sight seeing while trying to chase after kids, they will only do so much sight seeing.

I think most expeditions set the minimum age around 12.
And since I've already been there, I would fall back on my icebreaker trip to the North Pole. Some day I will have the $25,000 to do it.
Barring that, I'd do the Lindblad Cape-to-Cape trip that stops in Tristan da Cunha and tries to land on Inaccessible Island. But again, expedition trips usually have a minimum age.
With kids, how about a river cruise through Russia? Or Egypt & Jordan? Dubai?
knowing more info now, i think barcelona and the surrounding areas might be perfect. we just went in november so it was not beach weather but we had a fantastic time exploring the city. art and architecture heaven and then you also have beaches and other beach towns nearby (stiges, etc). there were lots of families there.
the ligurian coast of italy (cinque terre, portofino) might also be a great vaca.
in the US: new england or the pacific northwest?
I agree with this, although DH and I were in Barcelona w/o our children we saw tons of kids and the beach area there was very nice. You could also go up the coast so you'd again have beach and culture. (I also loved Barcelona!)
And in the US, I've always wanted to go to San Juan Islands
hard to say as i'm not one with kids.
how long do you want to go for?
I don't have kids, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
If someone else was footing the bill, I would go somewhere in the South Pacific--French Polynesia or Fiji. However, I don't know if that is a particularly kid friendly vacation spot.
Maybe Australia? You could explore beaches, the reef, cities, the outback, etc.
