  • Oh. My. God.

    This is so freaking hilarious!

That said, I know a lot of people who use it and vouch for it. I haven't tried yet. ^^; I feel it'd be insanely messy if I had to change it at work for whatever reason.

This is the exact same reason I am very hesitant to try it. I don't buy pads from the store anymore either though.. I buy them through a company that makes chemical free ones.

  • hahaha I'm sorry it didn't work out for her.

I've used the Diva Cup for about 2 years and love it! It took me a few months to really get the hang of it and feel comfortable not using a panty liner as backup. I had to use a tampon last month and it just felt so wrong. I couldn't wait to get home so I could use my Diva Cup. It's awesome because it really only does need to be emptied 2 times a day. It's very rarely that messy. I think tampons were worse.

  • ROFLMAO. That was hysterical!! That poor lady.

I will say -- before we got KTFU, I was totally using a Diva Cup. And, yes, the first time you put it in, it's weird and difficult to get correctly placed, and the first time you try to take it out, it's weird and difficult, too. But every time after that, it gets a LOT easier! Honest. Even changing it out in a public (or work) restroom isn't that hard, though I do recommend starting on a weekend (or even in the shower!) so you've got comfortable surroundings and don't worry about making a mess or whatever.

The ladies at the Menstrual Cups community on LiveJournal have a lot of fantastic information; they say things a lot better than I do (esp in the FAQ here!), but I'll give some brief info here... :)

    1) There're a ton of different brands, not just Diva Cup (though that one's easiest to find!). Not all brands will work for every woman, because all our Love Canals are shaped differently, our cervices sit in different places, etc.

    2) The turning thing that the reviewer mentioned doesn't have to be a full 360? rotation or anything -- just twist it a little from side to side to make sure it's not stuck in place. If it IS stuck into place, it's usually holding on by suction, and THAT is what causes it to go way, way up like a helium balloon and be hard to remove later. So don't skip that step!

    3) To help prevent suction, there're tiny little holes at the top around the edge of the cup, just below the rim, but these aren't really big enough to do the job, at least in the Diva Cup I had. :P So poke through 'em with a fork or something a few times until, if you press the rim of the cup against the palm of your hand and squeeze out the air, it pops right back into shape immediately. Not slowly, not after a second, but right away, same as if you weren't "sealing" the top of the cup off with your other hand.

    4) It can take some practice to get the cup into the most comfortable place for you. This is why I recommend trying it out at home first -- and possibly in the shower, if you're mess-phobic. And if the little stem on the bottom bothers you, you can trim it down or cut it off entirely, once you're happy with where the body of the cup is and you can get it out easily.

    5) To get it out again, it is easiest, IMX, to bend in the edge a bit, and then you can draw it all out at once. Note that if you haven't emptied it in "too long" (whatever that means for your particular flow; I have super-heavy days and super-light days, so that means it varies depending on where I am in my period), this can get a bit messy!

    6) To clean it in a public restroom (or if you're just feeling lazy at home, which I often am), tbh, I grab a large wad of toilet paper before taking out the cup. Then I pull it out, dump it out, and wipe it thoroughly with the toilet paper, and then myself a bit to make it less messy to reinsert, and then just pop it back in and move on with my day.

    7) While you're learning (or on days when you're not sure you'll be able to empty it often enough for whatever reason!), it IS a good idea to wear a pantiliner.

    8) It works great while swimming, bathing, or sleeping. :)

  • PS -- Thanks for reminding me that I need to research what cup I want to get after the baby's here! I'm thinking I'll probably want to go with the Fleurcup - very high capacity, and just as wide as the other 'post-childbirth' cups, without being quite as long as the Diva (which was causing me some annoyance before).

  • Omg, that was hilarious!

I use it and love it.  It's a bit messier to empty than a tampon is to change, but it doesn't leak (as long as it's emptied often enough), so overall it's less messy.

One of my favorite things about it is it can be inserted early, so if i expect my period to start i can insert it and not worry about it, which isn't an option with tampons.  Same goes for emptying it -- i can empty it right before leaving home so i don't have to worry about fussing with it in a public restroom or otherwise track down a bathroom when out.  It also doesn't require carrying anything with you, as is necessary with pads and tampons.

Soralette had lots of good info.  The wholes haven't been a problem for me, though.  Oh, and rinsing it with cold water before reinserting it helps it pop open easily.
