housewarming parties

do people have these still? i haven't been to one in a long time but people talk about having them and then they don't.

i have some friends who are buying a house and literally have nothing but a bed and a chair to bring with them when they go. anyway.. they won't ask for help from friends/family.. can i host a housewarming party for them? at their house? and suggest that certain giftcards would really help them in furnishing the place? lol.

what do you think?

Re: housewarming parties

  • I think they do!

Of course you can host a housewarming party for them.. who wouldn't like one after all. If you have it at their house make sure that appetizers and drinks (juice, punch etc) if provided by you or split it between you and some of the other guests.

If it is at their house depending on if you want it to be a surprise or not make sure you have it scheduled so they know you are coming... if you plan to do a surprise one even if you said you were coming to visit and then everyone else came about 1/2 hour after you got there you could totally work it out.

As far as gifts go, since they have little to furnish their house with I totally think that certain gift cards is a great idea... or a monetary gift.

  • mmm..i think hosting a house warming party at someone elses house is weird.... i wouldn't do it. *but* i would suggest/hint to friends that they are opting out of a housewarming, and could use some gift cards.

I guess most of the ones I've been to are usually surprises. So the way it works is you set it up so you (you and DH/SO) come to visit them that evening.  Then you have it all planned so that everyone brings chairs etc (if they don't have enough) and you've taken care of who provides the food etc. Since they are already expecting you it's not like you'll be walking in on them unexpectedly..

interesting. i've never heard of this before...but i guess that works out. but personally, i'd be a little irked...people inviting people over to my house? and it might be later than i planned on having people over...if it's just one other couple, i can estimate what time bedtime is, but with a party, i wouldn't be able to. but that's just because i'm very type-a. i guess it depends on the homeowners.

a lot of it probably depends on how well you know the couple. Most of the ones I've been to are for family so it's planned on a Friday evening.. which for our family is the typical evening for visiting.

  • You could also tell everyone (as the host) that you expect them to leave at a certain time because you don't want to overstep that way.. time wise

  • Our group definitely has housewarming parties, but they're not by any means gift-giving events. Usually hosted by the owner of the house.

  • When we bought our house, we wanted to have everyone over...so we through a party the weekend between my and DH's birthdays, and we called it a "Housewarming/Birthday Party."  Really, we just wanted our friends to come hang out since we actually had room for everyone, and then I felt kinda bad when a few people brought gifts.

  • i just think i really want to ask people to give them gifts. theyw ould NEVER ask people but i think they've helped people out enough that they'd want to help them out. it's a huge step and they're literally starting over.

anyway, thank you for your opinions!

  • H and I had a housewarming party when we moved. But... we were the ones who threw it. I would be, like Jennlin's hubz, pissed if people were just surprising us in our own new house. It's supposed to be something the owners do to show off the new place. I would just ask flat out, 'are you having a housewarming party? If so, where do you like to shop?' or 'what do you need?' Then you could get gift cards to those places or pick up something they really need.
  • Ok, I think the crash-surprise  hw party is rather a cute idea! But then 1) I'm not type-A except when I *HAVE* to be, 2) I'm the one who always has to do 90% of the party planning/prep so would be charmed to have someone go to all that effort for me!

We had a housewarming party. It was just themed/coincided with our annual Oktoberfest. I didn't expect gifts, but several people brought some anyway. I'm just terrible at ty notes Embarrassed
