Yoga v. Pilates

Has anyone done both?  Which is better for toning?  I want to add one of the two to my general workout routine of swimming but I've never done either and am looking for suggestions.

Re: Yoga v. Pilates

  • I think Pilates is, but I enjoy yoga more. I am more likely to go to more yoga classes than pilates, so that's my long-term commitment. However, when I signed up for a pilates series class, I noticed a difference in my body much faster. I think it might be because the routine more consistently focuses on the same part of your body?

  • To me pilates feels like a workout when you're done and you definitely feel it the next day when you start out.  Never felt that way with yoga. Yoga is a bit wishy washy for me but I do classes to workout rather than to relax as such. (I feel relaxed after a pilates class for having done it, but yoga seems to relax during the class...)

  • I prefer pilates, and if you can get a good deal on pilates reformer classes, I'd recommend that. I loved those when I went but they're more expensive so I only do that when my fitness studio runs a promotion.

What exactly is palates reformer? I've got $4k unallocated in my spousal support account from H's company that I'm going to lose if I don't use, so price isn't really an issue for the classes.

The machines offer more resistance than just your body and gives a more intense workout.

  • I prefer pilates over yoga for toning as well.  I never feel like I get much work out of yoga...I use it more for flexibility and relaxation.

Yes! And it looks silly but oh man, it totally works. The bottom of the machine are springs that you change for different exercises. They're all different resistance. A lot of the exercises are done in a mat class too (like when she's flapping her arms... those are called "hundreds") but the springs make it... better? I don't want to say harder, really, because you can modify all kind of exercises regardless of what class you take. Also, if you don't like pilates, try a different instructor. I hated the first pilates class I went to and I'm so glad I tried a different instructor. Find one who will correct your form, but in a gentle manor. I'm not a fan of boot camp type instructors when it comes to pilates. Also, pilates should make your muscles sore but you shouldn't feel pain. Let your instructor know if you do (especially in your neck!) and they will correct you or help you modify.

  • Thanks guys.  It looks like palates is what I'm looking for.  I'm going to go down to the palates studio by my house tomorrow and ask some questions.
  • I like yoga better. For toning the type of yoga is important. There are different styles that range from very relaxing with slow stretching to constant movement with the breath to intense stretching/strength.

Try yoga and pilates if you can. Try the different styles of both, have fun, and see what you like best.

  • I really enjoy both but saw a bigger difference with pilates. I loved the reformer classes but did find it beneficial to start with a mat class to learn the basics before doing them on the reformer.
