Outdoor ceremony sites?

(I haven't been on the Knot forever but should probably ask over there also.  Eek.)

Does anyone know of any really fabulous outdoor wedding ceremony sites that have an on-site backup in case of bad weather?

I know of The Woods Chapel in Orono but wasn't sure what else to suggest.

I know they also like the outdoor amphitheater at Carlson Towers but I'm not sure if they have a backup ceremony space.

Thanks!  :-)

Re: Outdoor ceremony sites?

  • We had our wedding at Irvine Park in St. Paul. If they had their wedding reception at Forepaugh's just across from the park they have a room at Forepaugh's they could use for a backup for the wedding. It doesn't seat a ton of people though.

That's the trouble - they have a rough initial estimate of 200-250 people!  That really narrows down the choices.

  • I was going to suggest Schaar's Bluff in Hastings, I've been helping plan a wedding and we checked that place out. I thought it was great, but the indoor space wouldn't fit 200+.

What about Rice Park in downtown St. Paul? If they planned a reception at any of the four venues adjacent to the park, they would have an indoor space to use as an indoor ceremony back up: St. Paul Hotel, Landmark Center, 317 on Rice Park, or J.J. Hill Library. Here's a list of St. Paul parks with outdoor wedding spaces ... not sure they all have indoor spaces available at the park, but might have spaces nearby.

There's the amphitheater at Central Park in Roseville, it's close to the Civic Center so there's indoor space nearby. Or Hyland Park in Bloomington.

  • We went to a wedding on Nicollet island last summer and it was beautiful!  they have the building for the reception, but I assume that could be used as a backup for weather.

I was going to suggest this too. Is this your sister??

  • Yes, it's for my sister.  :-)  They are not officially engaged yet but she wants to narrow down a list of 10-ish places to go check out when they DO get engaged.  I think she is feeling overwhelmed already by how many ceremony/reception sites there are out there and how fast some of them book up.  Her BFF just got married in August so my sister saw just how much goes into planning a wedding.

It's a tad cart before the horse but what girl doesn't at least think about some of these things before being official?  I know I certainly did.  Big Smile  Actually, I think my mom is driving her cart full steam around the track already - she bought a Knot magazine and has already printed off info on weddings at Carlson Towers.  We have a momzilla on our hands folks!

What girl doesn't start planning their wedding before they are engaged?!? At least she has the guy:) I was wondering since you didn't mention Mill City. I bet it will be tons of fun planning her wedding. Keep us posted!

We have very different tastes so Mill City would NOT be her thing even though it fits her requirements of having an outdoor ceremony space with an indoor backup. :-)  She is much more traditional and formal than I am.

I'm very excited to help her plan.  I think they are shooting for a June 2013 wedding after she's done teaching for the year.  I'm guessing a proposal will happen early spring  so they'll have a little over a year to plan everything.  Her boyfriend is fabulous and they are just gaga for each other, it's really sweet.  I think my dad is a little nervous though because my sister tends to have expensive taste, haha.  It will be fun.  I remember the exciting anxious butterflies that happen in the time leading up to getting engaged and then all the excitement of planning.  Yay!  Such a fun time.

  • I got married at Panola Valley Gardens (http://www.panolavalleygardens.com). It was beautiful and perfect for us but it's in Lindstrom, MN which is about an hour from the twin cities.

    THIS!

I got married there as well and I was so pleased with Maryann and the hard work she put into helping us plan our big day. It's a beautiful site and she works hard to make sure that your day is exactly what you want. The only downfall, was it was a little hike to get there for some guests, but it's such a beautiful site I fell in love as soon as I arrived there. Highly recommended!

  • The Panola Gardens look beautiful!  They want to stay closer to the Twin Cities though so that is out.

I talked to her last night and she said they REALLY like The Woods Chapel for a ceremony and either the Lafayette Club or the Wayzata Country Club for a reception.  She used to love the Carlson Towers but feels it's too cold and sterile for her tastes.

    We shall see! :-)

    Thanks for the ideas everyone!

I think this is so funny...so her boyfriend knows she's looking at all these places?  Randy probably would have died if I had looked at places before we got engaged! Stick out tongue

They have gone together to check out these places.  :-) I think after my sister saw her BFF go through some stress trying to find wedding venues for 250 guests that weren't booked up it made her realize that good places in the Cities go quickly!  She doesn't even want to THINK about the other details until officially engaged.  And they aren't booking things right this second either, they just wanted a good idea of who to call when the day comes.  Her boyfriend is a planner so he's okay with being a little ahead of the game.

She just texted me that they went to look at Wayzata Country Club last night and loved it so that is their #1 choice right now with the The Woods Chapel as a ceremony site.  We went to a wedding at The Woods last fall and it was stunning.  They looked at Lafayette but I think it's $$$$$$$ and you can't even take pictures on the grounds!

That's really cool and kind of cute that they are doing it ahead of time.  Good luck to them, and you will definitely have to keep us posted with all the details when the big day does come!

Why would you have a wedding somewhere that you can't take pictures?!  That's craziness!

Have you gone over there yet?

I had been thinking about checking there too, but I'm afraid I'll get sucked back in.

My brother is getting married in about a year (well, remarried technically, he's divorced), and his fiancee has asked for help in planning. She says that she doesn't know where to start and doesn't know the first thing about planning a wedding (it's her first). Of course, I loved wedding planning, so it didn't take much arm twisting to get me to agree to help. Big Smile
