Anyone made oatmeal in the crock pot?

If so, how was it? I got a new crock pot recipe magazine last night and it has a lot of delicious sounding oatmeal concoctions in it and some recipes say to cook it for 2-3 hours and some for more like 6 hours. Any tips? Does it dry out too much? TIA!

Re: Anyone made oatmeal in the crock pot?

  • I made some with the steel cut oats, it was ok. I didn't really add much to it though so it might have been bland because of that. The edges also got really crispy and it was hard to clean the crockpot insert. I also like a more watery oatmeal and this was really thick. Let me know how yours turns out, I'd love to try again with a more flavorful recipe.

  • I haven't experimented with it yet b/c DH doesn't like oatmeal, so I never had a reason to try it.  Now, DS would share it w/ me, so I'd like to give it a go, but every recipe I've found has conflicting reviews.  Most of them are also w/ steel cut oats and I'm just not as wild about those as I am about regular rolled oats.  If you try any recipes and they're successful, please share!
  • I made a pumpkin apple cranberry oatmeal in the crockpot.  If it's going to cook for more than 2 hours, you pretty much have to use steel cut oats or it will just come out like pasty gruel.  Even then I wouldn't go longer than 6 hours.  It's tough either way because that means you can't just set it before you go to bed and wake up to oatmeal.  I put everything together then turned it on "low" around midnight then woke up and turned it off around 6 am.  It's good, but not exactly the set-it-and-forget-it type of crock pot recipe.

Can you just use the timer so it switches off to warm? That's what I was planning on doing. Good to know about the steel cut oats.

  • I've made this a few times...I didn't use steel cut oats and it was still really good. :) It's a HG recipe.

  • That sounds great AK! I'm printing that off now.

So I made a recipe last night with steel cut oats, maple syrup, craisins, golden raisins, dried peaches, cinnamon and vanilla. I had the crockpot set for 6 hours and then it probably was on warm for 2 hours. It was a little too sweet but the consistency was good so I think I'll try something simpler next time. Thanks!
