1st Time Home Buyer

Hi all... I just need some advice. The H and I are going to start looking at which areas we are thinking of buying a home.

Once we have that down... what's next???? I am completely clueless since this iss the first time either of us are going through this.

How should I educate myself?

Any advice would be great!

TIA

Ellie

Re: 1st Time Home Buyer

  • The very first thing you should do is meet with a mortgage broker and determine your budget and figure out how much money you will need to close.

Then start driving neighborhoods and get a feel for what interests you.

  • Ditto in getting a broker, but also take a look on HAR.com just to get a feel for what you can get for your money.  Also, know that houses look WAY different in person than it does in pictures (usually for the worse!), so make sure to physically visit (with your realtor) any house you are interested in.  Also, try to not focus on paint color or things you can easily change.  Bring a measuring tape and compare any dimensions to a room that you are familiar with so you can visualize how furniture will work.  House hunting can be overwhelming, but fun!
  • To bone up on terms and just general info so you know what the professionals are talking about, I highly recommend "Home Buying for Dummies." it's an easy read and broken down in sections that you can read what you need to. When we bought for the first time, we had both read it and our agent was so impressed with our knowledge and educated questions, she borrowed the book to show other agents to possibly suggest to their clients.
