Re: Hawaii
I knew i'd like Hawaii, but i really loved it there. Dh and i went with friends last summer and it was fabulous. We stayed a week on Kauai and a long weekend on Oahu. I wouldn't bother visiting the Waikiki area again, but everything else was wonderful.
What do you want out of your trip? How do you like to vacation?
Best sound ever: baby's heartbeat! (Heard @ 10w1d)
i like hawaii. it's beautiful, there's lots of culture, and lots to do there..
i think it's fun to go once or twice, but i really don't have much interest in going again (but h really really really wants to go, since it's relatively cheap compared to other tropical sunny places).
also, what island of hawaii? that probably makes a difference. as an adult, i've only been to oahu.

jumped ship to the new and improved nest. back to TB for baby boards.
We honeymooned at Kaanapali Beach, Maui and I'd go back in a heartbeat! Granted, Kauai and/or the big island are probably next on my list, since Maui is more touristy, but we still really loved in. Maui is great because they have a large enough airport that you can fly direct from Seattle without a stopover in Honolulu. I'm not sure if that's true of other islands.
Regardless, Hawaii in general is wonderful! Go if you get the chance.

i've heard maui is beautiful but if you want more of a night life go to oahu. i think it really just depends on what you wanna do.
i really wanna go someday.. i wanna see them roast a pig... or whatever they do at the luaus.
I've been to Maui 4 times and it's a fun island. Lahaina is the 'town' but isn't as touristy and city-like as Waikiki on Oahu. We stayed on the north end at Kahana (a little north of Kaanapali) at these condos:http://www.valleyisleresort.com/ . I agree with LegalBritt that's the way to go. We stopped at Costco near the airport to get breakfast stuff, lunch stuff and booze for mai tais (they sell liquor at their Costco). The beaches are beautiful and there is some great snorkeling. Kihei is where the expensive shopping/hotels are so we pretty much avoiding staying down there. The Maui Revealed guide book is really good for finding beaches with good snorkeling. The was a beach near Kihei that we got to snorkel with a turtle!
Hawaii is my favorite place in the world. Hope you get to go! This makes me excited for our trip to Kauai in June!
I went to Maui for my honeymoon in mid-May. I booked an all inclusive deal with the Royal Lahaina Resort (which is actually in Kaanapali) through Costco, it included two free Mai Tais from the bar every day, a booze cruise, a luau, and $250 spending $$ for around the resort. DH and I ate out a lot, but the $250 helped to pay for a few dinners at the resort restaurant. The Maui Revealed book helped us figure out what restaurants around the island were the best bang for our buck.
The Road to Hana tour was really fun and going to the top of Haleakala was great, though we didn't go to the sunrise thing (if you want to do that, you should go in the first couple of days you're there, before you get used to Maui-Time).

We went to Maui two years ago, and this year we went to Oahu and Maui. I'm glad we went to Oahu, but I prefer Maui. I don't really find Maui all that touristy, but maybe it's where we go?
If we go to Oahu again, I'd want to stay in Kailua...beautiful beaches, small town.
On Maui, we stayed both times in Kihei at Hale Pau Hana (which is a beachfront condo). I'm surprised to hear someone say that Kihei is more expensive...we went back to this condo largely because it was cheaper than anything else we could find on the island that was still beachfront. (That, and we really like the condo and its beach.)

We just got back from Oahu this morning. Overall I really liked it, but after 8 days there, H and I felt like we exhausted things to do/see on the island and would like to try something new.
We went snorkeling, did a luau, drove all around the island, had amazing meals, did a ton of really fun hikes, saw a sunset at Diamond Head. Overall, a fabulous trip and I'd recommend it. We stayed 4 days in downtown Honolulu and 4 days in Waikiki. Waikiki was extremely toursity and commercialized, but I'm glad we got to experience it.
