Anyone done a juice fast or detox?

I recently watched Fat Sick & Nearly Dead - it was pretty inspirational (both the men featured lost so much weight, and now are living extremely healthy lifestyles).  I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a book on this subject?  I'm also wondering if anyone's used the Breville juicer and wondering how it ranked (more specifically I'm looking at the compact model).  I'm not looking to do some crazy fast, but I think if I could do it for 5-7 days, and then start working some of that into my lifestyle, it would be great.

Re: Anyone done a juice fast or detox?

  • Hey there!

FI and I have watched Sick, Fat and Nearly Dead 3 times within the last two weeks.  It's brilliant.  I bought him a juicer for Christmas with a great juice book.

This is the juicer we bought from BBB  (with coupon!) http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=17351923

And this is the book: http://www.amazon.com/Big-Book-Juices-Natural-Vitality/dp/1844839737/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325864611&sr=1-1

He's already lost 5 lbs this week, and I lose about 1-1.5 lbs per day.  You're filling your body with the micronutrients it needs, so it's not like you're living on limited calories or starving yourself.  Truthfully, the first two days suck as you're lethargic and tired...that's your body getting rid of the glucose and sugars, etc found in processed food you might have eaten the day before.  I now feel less hungry, have more energy and my digestive track is definitely back on track.  Keep drinking lots of water to keep your tummy full!

Worse case, you've done it for a few days, your digestion improves and you've given your body fruits and veggies it probably hasn't had in a while.  Totally worth it.

    Good luck!

  • I have done a modified elimination diet where we used juices at first...sort of like this one: http://www.wholelifenutrition.net/id16.html.  It's more for detoxing all the stuff that makes me have skin rashes, but I know two moms who did this to eliminate colic or sensitivity issues when breastfeeding.

I know - the documentary is pretty awesome.  I figure even if I gained the weight right back, it will help change what your tastebuds want and it will also give me a nice cleanse of the junk in my system.  Glad to hear the diet is doing good things for you, and I'll take a look at the book.  Do you like the juicer you bought?  I was looking at the Breville - it's a little pricy but gets good ratings.

I'll take a look at that book too, thanks.

You might be interested in the documentary - the guy starts the diet because of a skin rash he's on all kinds of meds for (not to mention he was really overweight), and it seemed to really help him.

Thanks, this is the second time it has come-up in the last couple weeks.  A friend who was visiting over Christmas also mentioned the show when we were talking about childhood obesity.  I just added it to my Netflix Queue.

Yes, the Cuisinart juicer is great.  it comes apart to clean easily and does a great job juicing.  definitely recommended.
