BWTods

I know it's the wrong day, but I have questions. :)

1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

There is a gate on Alex's bedroom doorway, but it only gets locked at night so she can't get out while we're sleeping. Otherwise, she has always had free reign of the house. It's a one-level though, so stairs were never an issue.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Alex gets at most 4 milks per day. Other than that, she can have as much water (which she hates and never drinks) or juice (which is Motts for Tots and then that gets watered down at least half way too). We will let her sip a non cafinated soda vary rarely when we're out, or she can have a Capri Sun for a special treat when we have company or something.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

We haven't done anything like that. Other than the one day of daycare, she's always monitored by someone we know. I don't have a gym membership, otherwise I would have probably considered that by this age, but not until she could tell me if something happened.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

I don't keep my cool. I yell. It's bad, I try not to, but I do. I last felt this way probably an hour ago. Alex really knows how to push my buttons.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

Free range. We gate the entry way hall way since that is where we throw stuff and have stairs. Nice to have a junk area that is off limits to kids / dogs. She can't do stairs without us, and we have gates at the bottom of the stairs, but rarely use them.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Evie will only drink water. Have tried juice and she is not a fan. Don't know about soda...

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

    Nope.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

That was this morning. Nothing was right for her and she would cry putting on her shoes and jacket. I sat on the floor at her level and said "I know it is difficult, but we have to get to school." She walked over to me and we cuddled for a minute. That helped. I have found getting to her level makes things easier. Then there are times where I just put on the TV...

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

Most of the house is open so Liam has free range. We do have a gate at the top of our stairs so we can reign him in when its bathtime or time for bed. We also have a door on our basement so we shut that if we don't want him down there without us.  Usually, he stays on the same floor as we are though.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Liam drinks 2-3 cups a milk a day. Tons of water and maybe a juice. I am not comfortable with him drinking soda until he is way older, however I am the only one who drinks soda in the house (and its diet) so he won't be exposed to it often unless we go out.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

    No

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

Ha, excellent question! I am still trying to figure out how to remain calm but with an almost 2 year old who is very active and curious it can be tough. Open to all suggestions:)

Honestly (and its terrible), I usually feel crazy by the end of a weekend, and need to get out of the house on my own.  Liam needs interaction with this friends so by the end of the weekend, he is ready to go to school and mommy is ready for a vacation at work:)

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house? free range--we close doors to the bathroom and stuff but we live in a small apartment so she needs room to run around

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop? milk, waterm maybe some diluted juice.  She gets sips of Soda when we are out(I know I can hear the nest groan and cluck in disgust).  When she is older it will be a treat when we go out, we rarely have it in our house.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.? Yep she loves the gym daycare!

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way? I lock myself in the bathroom for a couple minutes.  Umm Tuesday night--I was counting the minutes til bedtime.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

Our house is only one level, so since we don't have stairs to worry about we pretty much let him roam. If for some reason we don't want him in a particular room we shut the door, but that never seems to work out because a cat always seems to be trapped on the wrong side of the door. When he's in a real bed, we will probably do what Jill does with Alex.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Zac only drinks water and milk through out the day. Occassionally he gets a watered down lemonade if we are out and about. He's never been a huge fan of juice, so I hope the same goes for pop. DH is the only one who drinks it in our house. Zac has been known to sneak a sip.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

No. However, we just got a rec center membership and they offer it, so DH and I are considering using it since one, it's free and two, we can go at the same time vs. tag teaming which would equal more quality family time.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

I really try to reign it in when it's getting out of control because my mom was a screamer. We're just passionate people. LOL.

Last night during bed time I got irked, I was trying to read him a book and he kept talking and I snapped the book closed and said, "Be quiet!! Do you know what that means? Don't talk while mommy reads." My tone was rough and I probably put a little squeeze in my hold - - - he was quiet for the rest of the book, but I hate knowing it was fear that made him do it vs. just good habits. :(

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

We recently removed most of the downstairs gates since we feel better now about her roaming alone but we still have a top-of-the-stairs gate and a bottom of the stairs gate.  We have an extra that we move around as needed (Block of the office or block off the kitchen).

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Milk.  When she is with us on the weekends I will give her a sippy of water with like 1/2 an ounce of juice in it.  She calls it "Gooose". :)  I don't love the idea of soda, but I drink it a lot so I am expecting her to be interested.  She already is and has gotten a few sips of an unattended glass lately.  Grrrr....

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

No, only b/c she's in FT daycare.  If I was a SAHM, then most definitely I would to get time to do errands, or what have you.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

I struggle with this.  I yelled at her twice over Christmas break and felt so terribly afterwards.  I didn't grow up with yelling, and I never yell otherwise in my life, so I don't know where it's coming from except extreme frustration.  Working on it.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?  Free range.  We don't use gates or keep doors closed since K is old enough to keep out of trouble.  We live in a 2-level house but K doesn't go downstairs unless someone is down there.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?  Milk at meals otherwise water.  He rarely drinks juice and never pop.  I'm not sure when pop will be ok but hopefully not for a couple more years.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?  Nope.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?  I turn on the tv.  It keeps K occupied so I can cool down and get stuff done.  K has been pretty good lately because we've had a lot of visitors to keep him occupied so he hasn't driven me nuts in awhile.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

We live in a semi gated home. Since Kellen still gets into mischief and Tessa is now fully mobile and getting into the mischief stage, we still have to gate off areas. We have a gate right before our stairs so that neither of them can go upstairs alone. We also have a gate around our kitchen because it isn't properly child proofed yet. Our hallway downstairs from the living room to their play room is open so that they are free to go between the two areas as much as they please.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Both of them love milk. Kellen drinks about 4 cups a day and Tessa gets about 3 cup a day. Any other time they get water. Kellen can have a Capri Sun every once in a while, but juice doesn't really agree with either kid very often. We never give them soda, but we stopped keeping it in the house because DH and I both gave it up in the New Year.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

Nope. They are always either home with me or DH or with family.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

I try and walk away from the situation if it's really bad. I have occasionally lost my cool with Kellen and yelled at him, but I have gotten pretty good about keeping my patience with him. Last night Kellen was in an awful mood and crying and throwing tantrums alot, especially at dinner time. But, we just kept carrying on as normal and he stopped because he wasn't getting the attention he wanted.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?  Mostly free range.... just gates at the top & bottom of the stairs.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?  Water.... she still refuses milk (legit gags after even the tinest sip)  Once in a while she'll do juice, but she's not really interested.  She loves stealing sips of my flavored seltzer water from time to time (I think she really likes that the bubbles tickle), so I'll be curious to see what she does with soda down the road.  For now though, the girl just really loves her water.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?  I'm with Megan on this one... Mads is in daycare all day, so it's not really an issue for us.  If I were a SAHM I'd most likely be trying to find a place that I liked/trusted for a quick break to go to the gym or run errands.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?  Paul & I are really good about helping one another out with this one & handing her off when we need a break.  Otherwise, I just try to distract her with something (tv is usually a safe bet) & walk away and take a few deep breaths.  My mom was a yeller & I know that I have it in me to be the same way, so I'm trying really hard to avoid going that route.  Knock on wood, we've been having a really good streak lately, but before Christmas there were some stretches of whining/tantrums that really gave me a run for my money.
  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house?

We live in a multi-level home.  The main floor has the kitchen/dining room and living room and up about 1/2 a level is our bedroom, the kids' bedroom, and the bathroom.  We close the door on our bedroom and the bathroom, but Marshall has free roam of everything else.  There is a gate to keep him from going downstairs.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop?

Marshall gets 2-3 sippy cups of milk and then water the rest of the time.  I wish he would drink more water, but I can't do anything more than offer it to him, which I do.  He will sometimes get juice, which I water down about 1/2 and 1/2.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.?

I haven't, but I would use one at a gym if I went.  Oh wait, does church count?  He goes into the room for 1-2 year olds at church.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?

I can usually do pretty good, but unfortunately when I lose my cool I usually do some yelling.  Yesterday I got a little frustrated because of the whining whining whining.

  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house? We have the kitchen gated off so the girls have access to the living and dining room (they are open to one another) can go down the hall to the playroom.  We also close the bathroom door and the office is off the kitchen so they don't have access to them.  Then upstairs we just gate off the top of the stairs once they are up there and they have free range, although they usually play in the twin's room or Abby's.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop? Milk or water.  Abby is allowed one juice box at lunch because now she is in pre-school and most kids bring a juice box.  Soda, we won't let them drink it until they are much older and it would only be a special occasion sorta thing.  We actually don't even have soda in our house.  Just milk, water, some juice, and alcohol...lol

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.? Nope, but then again I work all day and my gym doesn't have a daycare.

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way?
I walk away when Abby is throwing a fit.  It's usually Abby that drives me crazy these days and I just walk away from her and go into the other room.
  • 1. Do you live in a gated or free range home? Meaning how much freedom does your tod have throughout your house? We had a gate blocking off the kitchen but I can no longer step over it (and we can't bolt it in to use the door part of it because we're renting) so he has free range. We keep our bedroom door and both bathroom doors closed during the day and we don't have any stairs to worry about.

    2. What do your kids drink throughout the day? As they get older, how do you feel about pop? 100% water. He still won't drink milk and the only time he gets juice is if it's the adam & eve veggie/juice/not much sugar kind and my mom sneaks it to him, lol.

    3. Do you ever use hourly kid watching services at places, for example the gym, school, etc.? No... he would so not go for that. My mom is the only one who watches him, but soon I'd like to give the ILs a chance so we have another option!

    4. How do you keep your cool when your kid is driving you nuts? When was the last time you felt this way? I try to pawn him off because usually when I feel like that it's because I haven't gotten enough rest lately. I feel like that about once a week lately, which makes me feel terrible :(
