Anyone wanna here me vent about my mortgage plight?

Ugh. So late December we get a bill from the bank that now holds our mortgage (not the originator - the mortgage was sold almost immediately after we closed). They say our escrow is short so we owe them $1,800. The escrow is sized to include 2 months of tax payments plus some extra cushion at all times. We call and are all 'ummm what?'. So they say that the property taxes went up from when the escrow was established when we closed at the end of May. Okay, I understand that, but the taxes only went up by $300 for the year, so why the $1500 discrepancy? They have no answer. We look into the matter further and it seems that they paid the property taxes to the town one month early for the first quarter, depleting the escrow account more than was expected according to the initial schedule. But I ask you why this is my problem? It's not my fault. They have deviated from the initial schedule and now show three property tax payments occurring in the span of 7 months. WTF? So now we have to find someone in the bank who knows something to fix this mess. Okay, I'm done ranting.

  • Ugh.  That sucks hard.

  • Oh, that sucks! Did they raise your mortgage payment in addition to sending you the bill?  If not, the extra 1500 might be to pad your escrow account for the remainder of 2012?  I had something similar happen (except that my taxes legitimately went up), and I was given the choice of either making a lump sum payment, or making higher mortgage payments all year.

Either way, it sounds like a bunch of BS.  Hopefully you'll be able to find someone at the bank who can sort it all out.

  • I share your pain. For some reason, even though home values were falling in my area, my taxes kept going up, up, up. So now I have to pay Twan half of $900 for the escrow shortage from last year (I was in the house for most of the time span in question). It's not as much as yours, but damn, I don't feel like paying $450 for a house I don't live in.

  • It's about time they started taxing the super rich!

That's super annoying.  I hope you find someone competent at the bank who can resolve the problem so you don't have to shell out a bunch of cash unnecessarily.

  • That sucks.  Having to have an escrow account is one of the things that ticks me off about our mortgage.  Every year so far it's had more than necessary in it and they end up sending us a check at the end of the year.  I think I should be able to at least collect some interest or something on that money of mine they're holding unnecessarily.  I wish we could get rid of it, but then our interest rate goes up, so we just deal with it.

  • Every mortgage my h and I have had have egged us on escrow somehow. It's infuriating. Should Thisbe easier for money people to figure out?
  • This happened to us last year, and we fought it for a while but ended up paying it, and then 6 months later got a check from the mortgage company for almost the same amount.  In sum, they are morons.
