OBX houses?

Can anyone recommend a specific house at the OBX? We are looking for a modern house large enough to accommodate 8 adults and 5 children, preferably with a pool and hot tub. We have never been to the OBX so not sure which area is the best. We would like to relax on the beach some days and also have activities around for the kids. I think I have read Corolla and Duck might be the best areas for this. I have been looking on VRBO but there are a ton of houses to look through. I need to be able to narrow down the general areas at least.

Re: OBX houses?

  • A specific house in 200 miles of coastline that's available at an unknown time?  That's a tall order.

I would suggest checking out other OBX posts like the one a few posts below to determine what area you want to stay in.  Then use a realty site to get better search functionality.  You'll be able to filter out by number of bedrooms, oceanfront, pool, date available, etc.  You'll see the number of listings shrink to something more manageable.  Then pick one you like.

FWIW, when we go with the nieces/nephews, the beach and the pool are pretty much all the activities they need.

Like any good super hero, I'm using my alter ego to protect my identity. Goodbye Silver poster status!
  • hi!

i also postd in the OBX post a few down... BUT my parents own a vacation house in the OBX- on Hatteras Island. so i'm pretty familiar with the area.

with the kids, you probably want more "stuff" to do around... so you probably want to look in the towns of Nags Head, Duck, Kitty Hawk... Hatteras island (where my parents house is) is GORGEOUS, but doesnt' have quite as much going on as the other towns I just mentioned.

As far as a house-  check out some of the rental companies down there. Sunrealtync.com, twiddy realty, surf or sound realty, hatteras realty. they all have websites where you can put in the things you want in a house, and it gives you some options. even if the house itself doesn't have a pool, most of the rental companies have pool "clubs" that you can use when you rent a house through them. you can also call the companies and talk to them and they'll help you find a house. a lot of tem offer linen service so you don't have to bring all of your own sheets and towels with you... or you can pay extra for stuff like having them clean the house daily or midweek instead of just at the end...

  • We stayed at The Sanderling Resort and Spa and it was HEAVENLY.  They have homes to rent as well but it's super expensive.  It's in Duck and well worth the money.  They have a private beach and pool and a ton of other activities.  Our suite was literally an apartment with two bathrooms, a balcony with two entrances... just gorgeous.  There were fox in the dunes we could see from our balcony and dolphins swimming in the ocean early in the morning when the sun rose.  So sad we only stayed for 3 nights.
  • We stayed at Lost Shaker Of Salt last summer. It had 8 BR's I believe. It had a pool, hot tub, built in kiddie pool, game room, video arcade games, pool table, bar, yard, nicely appointed kitchen.  It was a few min walk to the beach but there was a bathhouse at the beach for bathrooms there in case.  It was in Nags Head and I believe we booked through Village Realty.  There were 2 sets of washer and dryers too and a nice patio on the top floor.  The kids loved the game room - especially the arcade games.  We had 5 families with kids ages 3-14.
  • I would check out twiddy.com if you haven't already.

I stayed in Tangled Up in Blue.  It was nice, clean, and would fit a lot of people.  It had a room with two bunk beds.  It had 3 master bedrooms.  Then multiple other bedrooms.  (we didn't use them all so I cannot remember)

Had a small pool and hot tub.

It was in the 4x4 only area though.  (you have to have 4 wheel drive to get there as you literally drive on the beach)

You can park at the twiddy office and take a 4x4 cab if you really wanted.  It's about $120 for an eight mile hike down to the houses.  (some houses are closer)
