Shore Excursions on Cruises

We are going on a Southern Caribbean Cruise (my first cruise!) in just a few days and have held off on booking our excursions. We are still debating whether to book them through Princess or get off and find someone. (I'm a little weary, but I've heard many people do it.)

We are leaving out of San Juan and visiting St. Thomas, Tortola, Antigua, Dominca, and Barbados.

Can anyone share their experiences, either booking through the ship or when off?

Thanks!

Re: Shore Excursions on Cruises

  • You need to visit www.cruisecritic.com.  You will find a ton of information on your specific ship as well as your ports of call.

We used info we found there to book all our excursions on our own in advance and we are so glad we did.  It was significantly cheaper, and we weren't in huge cattle calls coming off the ship.  We had much smaller groups and loved every minute.

  • I agree, cruisecritic is great in helping you determine those things.

As for booking through the cruise line vs. outside- just about every review I've seen says to book your excursions ahead of time and not through the cruise line. Why? 1) Much less expensive, sometimes for the EXACT SAME excursion... 2) The cruise line offers a limited amount of excursions and sometimes the lines to sign-up and pay are ridiculous.. then by the time you try to reserve your spot, all the spots are taken.

Just do a little research on cruisecritic.com and find some credible and recommended tour guides. I posted a while back for my cruise that is similar to yours (here's the link- http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/61662341.aspx) and I was given these links for Barbados:

  • I second what PPs said - DON'T buy excursions through the cruise line and DO buy them in advance. Just getting off the ship and walking up to a vendor is asking for trouble.

CruiseCritic is a great resource to find reputable vendors.

  • I would recommend booking your shore excursions ahead of time. The last thing you need is to be disappointed that the excursion you want to go on is full. I have never booked any excursions with outside people. I don't trust it.
