Also, WWND about leave?

My C/S is scheduled for 1/27 (a Friday).  I don't want to waste maternity leave, but I also am not sure I want to work up until the very last minute either, because I've been pretty exhausted lately, and rundown.

I was thinking of taking off from Monday 1/23.  Then I have 4 days to relax a little, take care of some last minute things around the house, etc.  Is that too much?  Would you work right until the last day?

Re: Also, WWND about leave?

  • Really, that depends on your own personal situation.  For me, any leave before baby would have been either vacation or unpaid and I couldn't afford to take either.  If you can afford it, well 4 days isn't excessive and might be nice to have.

  • I was all about working up until I was having the baby, but my leave was all unpaid - they only covered insurance during that time.

I remember not wanting to go in toward the end, but I also played on the internet a lot more trying to pick baby names b/c I'd given away a lot of duties, so it wasn't bad.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • The majority of my leave was unpaid so I wanted to save it all for after the baby came, both times. I got 2 weeks of 9 paid for Gavin and 3 weeks of 12 paid for Hudson. If I had had the option though, I would have liked to have a couple of days off before the baby came to relax. However both of my boys came early so even if I had planned to stop working a week before I was due it still wouldn't have worked out!

  • I have always worked up until the day before I had baby. I plan to stick it out this time. I get no paid leave and I am only taking 3 weeks off once baby gets here. It's a little different for me though since I work at home so I am not having to leave baby that early...I just get to juggle more!

  • I think it just depends what you can afford, if you need that paid time after baby. If not I would definitely take off a few days beforehand!
  • I had to go on disability leave very early due to medical reasons for the girls and the nature of my work (11 hour shifts on my feet with NO one to help out so I could sit more....).  So my experience is pretty unusual....  But even before I knew I was having twins, I was hoping to take some time off prior to delivering to get things ready and rest.

I don't know how I would have felt with a singleton pregnancy vs this one (I'm a first time mom) but I think taking a few days prior to C/S date would be totally worth it.  Especially if you don't have any LOs yet, having time to do things you will have a harder time doing (grocery shopping, getting your hair done, going out for coffee, etc) without pre-planning after the baby comes.

Again it is a personal thing....some people want to save every minute of their time off for after the baby is born.  It just depends what you can swing, and fwiw, I don't think 4 days is excessive either!

  • Hm... I guess it cuts into my paid time - my leave is split, about 9 weeks paid, 3 weeks unpaid.
  • With DS, I worked up to the end.  This time, I set an end date.  Unfortunately, my DD was late and I ended up taking almost 2 weeks of leave before she was born.  I still think it was worth it!  Since you have a c/s scheduled, if you can afford the few extra days of leave, I would totally take it.  I was so tired and busy at work, it was nice just to (a) have an end date for work and (b) have some time to rest and make sure I felt prepared for the new babe.  I mostly sent DS to daycare, but I did take at least one day to do "special" stuff with him because I knew our time of that was limited.  I don't think 4 days is too long at all.

    Good luck!  It's coming up!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies!

I think I'll plan on taking the time, and if I feel super motivated, I can always go in to work anyway.  I haven't taken any extra time off in such a long time (no vacay other than sick days or DS sick days since May, and no extra holiday time), that I feel like I need a little refresher before DD gets here. :)

  • A little late and my situation is much different than most... my last day was three weeks before my due date. It gave me time to prepare as I had been working non-stop all year without a vacation since Oct 2010. I needed to get a lot done personally and for my own business and with the holidays I knew life would be crazy.

It was nice to be able to relax and take it all in, I felt like the two weeks I had out of the office gave me time to prepare mentally and to get through my task list. We had planned on me quitting and losing one salary anyhow and my boss unexpectedly paid me for an entire extra month as a "going away/maternity" gift.
