selling stuff on craigslist

Anyone done this?  Worth it or a hassle?  I've got some maternity/baby stuff I'd like to unload.  I've been donating most of it, but some of it is nice and I feel like I could sell it instead.  I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle or not.

Do you insist on cash?  Mail things or hand them over in person?  Thanks.

Re: selling stuff on craigslist

  • I just sold a camera lens and while it was a bit of a hassle it was something I wanted to get rid of. I insist on cash and meet in a public place to exchange just in case its a total weirdo. I don't like people to know where I live though it would be pretty easy for them to find out if they really wanted to. Do you have stuff for a boy or girl?

  • If you're willing to mail try ebay instead to get a better price for your stuff.

I use Craigslist for larger items that don't really work on ebay because they won't ship.

Ebay is a more concrete process.  Craigslist is full of flakes who will waste your time but it does eventually work.

I have shipped one Craigslist item but only after the cash hit my paypal account.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Our neighborhood has a local moms group on yahoo - I sell a ton of stuff on there, and if it doesn't work, sometimes I try craigslist.  The moms group is way more reliable, and it's basically our neighbors, so I feel like it's a little less exposing.  People don't get in touch and flake, either.  ;)
  • Really depends on what you are trying to sell and possibly your location.  We have had a lot of luck selling outdoor (sporting) equipment and furniture.  But I have not had much luck selling baby stuff on craigslist (bouncy chair, bumbo seat, swing, play gym etc).  Trying to decide if I should just go ahead and donate or what.  I was easily able to sell my infant car seat and a few strollers.  Definitely insist on cash.  I have always had people come to my house but my husband is always home.
  • What size is your maternity stuff and what season? I may be interested...

  • I sell larger things on CL all the time and have had great success.  I either meet them in a public place or, if the item is too big, have someone else with me at my place when they come.  I've never had any problems.

I'd also recommend E-Bay for smaller items that can be put in a pre-paid box and shipped easily.  I've used them for years for those things.

  • Another though is one of those consignment sales or consignment store if it's all baby and maternity stuff.

However... the process of tagging all that stuff nearly killed me so I did that once and then swore never again.

Now I pass down most of my stuff to friends, hold it until garage sale season or take it to Once Upon a Child where I can drop it off in one lump and make it their problem.

  • Coloradogirl - I have maternity clothes too if azure does not have anything you can use.  Mostly medium and large sizes.

I gave most of my clothes to a neighbor, but I have a couple of pairs of size 14 Gap jeans and pants left. I also have a bella band.

My other stuff right now is things like a moby wrap, a peanut shell baby carrier, a boppy, and stuff like that.
