Article: To Go or Not to Go--11 Places with a Bad Rap

I came across this article and thought it was interesting. I know this board gets a lot of questions like "Is _______ safe to visit?"

  • Interesting, thanks for posting.

  • Ugh, I saw this list, and Chile being on it is such BS. The other 10 are places I've actually heard people have concerns about, but the Chilean earthquake made people worried for all of 5 seconds, and it only was ever an actual issue for some winery tours in terms of things that visitors would see/do. Plus? Chile was the NYT's #1 destination for 2011, and the earthquake was in 2010, so it make no sense that in 2012 this article is acting like there's still a question about whether or not to come here.

Sorry OP, I think it's a great thing to post, just a little pet peeve :)

No worries. :) I actually posted it hoping it could spark discussion, but then I had to run.

I did not understand why Chile made the list either. I've never heard of it having a "bad rap."

  • I didn't understand Chile either.

I was hoping to see how they weighed in on Bahrain. I know things are better, but it barely makes the news, so it's hard to know how much better. Or even how bad it was to start with.

  • It is kind of a strange list..it seems like they picked some places just based on having natural disasters. (e.g. Japan, Chile, NZ)  Maybe because natural disasters unreasonably scare people off?  I am glad the verdict for Chile was "Go" in the article, since I went shortly after the earthquake to visit a friend in the Colchagua valley and despite some road disrepair, travel in the country was fine.

And all earthquakes, to be specific.  Why not mention Queensland, Australia that was ravaged by flooding?  Or Thai beaches that were tsunami'd (albeit years ago)?

The shark bit ticks me off.  Humans are so awful to sharks.  Needlessly!  We'll be sorry when they're gone.  Stupid humans.
