Memorial Day Weekend Destination

DH and I want to do a short trip Memorial Day weekend and we can't decide between San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, or a beach destination like Myrtle Beach?  We have never been to any of these destinations before.  We love the outdoors, history, and beach life.  We are hesitant to do SF Memorial Day weekend because we feel like it's not enough time.  We will be going Fri-Mon with no option to add on extra days due to lack of vacation time.

Thoughts?

TIA!

Re: Memorial Day Weekend Destination

  • That's an OK amount of time for Seattle, but the city will be super crowded with tourists and the hiking trails will be super crowded with locals.

  • My only thought is that at least for the Northeast, Memorial Day weather can be very unpredictable.  Some years it's really nice, others it's cold and rainy, so if you really want lay on the beach warm weather, you may not want to go to Boston.  There would obviously be a lot of other stuff to do there though.

I would think that Myrtle would be pretty warm that time of year, but I've only ever been there in August, so I'm not sure.  Never been to SF or Seattle, so I can't help you there.

  • I'm from Boston and I feel like it's always rainy at least one or two days that weekend... but weather is so unpredictable here! If your more concerned about the sites than the weather, do Boston. I flew into seattle a few summers ago then drove down the coast (beautiful!) to end up in SF. I would recommend taking a longer vacation and doing that sometime. You can do SF in 3 days but you might miss something, especially if you try to head up north for a wine day.

Personally, I would vote for Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Florida or someplace else warm since you'll be able to relax on the beach :) I've been to the beach on Memorial Day but I wouldn't plan a day around it since it's not always so nice here.

  • As a previous poster mentioned, visiting Seattle is definitely doable with that amount of time. However, weather around that time of year can be so unpredictable. Last year it was cloudy and raining. Personally, I think that the best time to visit Seattle is July-September when you are more or less guaranteed decent weather. I love Boston and San Francisco as well, but again, weather could be a potential issue in both locations. Myrtle Beach would probably be your best bet, at least weather-wise!
  • As pps said, Memorial Day in the Northeast can be rainy and even chilly.  We went to Florida for Memorial Day weekend last year and the weather was absolutely perfect - nice hot beach weather but no summer humidity or rain.
  • Don't go to Myrtle Beach.  It's a tourist trap and really overrated.  A nice SC beach destination that is fabulous for Memorial Day weekend is Charleston.  If we go anywhere for that holiday that is where we go.  You have the historic downtown area which is a great little walking city, and if you want to go to the beach you can, too.  It is definitely warm enough then, it's usually blazing hot down there by Memorial Day.
