Cell phones while traveling overseas?

I'm going to France for 10 days next week. Usually I don't require a cell phone while traveling, but my husband is in Afghanistan and I want to be able to talk to him at least a few times. Do you guys know anything about ways to use a US numbered cell phone overseas without paying an arm and a leg?

Thanks

Re: Cell phones while traveling overseas?

  • I you have an unlocked handset you can set up a US number for Skype and then forward Skype calls to your local mobile. That doesn't help as much with outgoing bough. Do you need to call Afghanistan or will you primarily be receiving calls?

  • I'll only be receiving calls, but I just learned that my iPhone 4 won't work in France.... something about the type of *insert technical jargon here*.

So, Verizon will send me a loaner phone that I can use in France, and I'll pay .99 cents per minute.  That's not too bad, I don't think... especially when he can only call for short periods of time (5-10 minutes) and not even every day.

Thanks for the suggestions, though, I appreciate it!!

Originally I had planned on using Skype (he can call my skype number), but I really think the cost of the internet at the hotels we are staying at might make it more expensive to do it that way! Plus the added hassle of having to keep the computer up and set up times for him to call... this is better.

  • I've got a spare unlocked Nokia that you can borrow if you want to just buy a prepaid SIM card when you get to France.  Its quad band and will work almost anywhere in the world.

Hey that's so sweet, thanks for offering! I need it to have a US number so my husband can use his military phone, so that won't work.  Thanks again though for offering!

  • Get a pre-paid phone, or an international phone. You can get these in the international terminal either prior to leaving the US, or once you arrive at your destination. Sorry, I dont have the link...
