What to do in Fort Lauderdale for a day?
DH and I are cruising out of Fort Lauderdale and are thinking we would like to fly into it the day before departure (Friday arrival into FLL).
We'd ultimately like to find a flight that leaves late afternoon Friday so we don't have to miss a day of work, but due to flight schedules and price, we may have to leave that morning instead.
If we do arrive in Ft. Lauderdale around lunchtime, what can we do for the day? Not sure if we should rent a car since we don't want to feel "stuck" at the hotel all day long...
Re: What to do in Fort Lauderdale for a day?
If you like to eat crabs (drenched in butter and garlic), you should go to the Rustic Inn Crabhouse. We had that the night before our cruise and it was sofreakingfantastic. omg.
Also, I would definitely recommend flying in the night before the cruise because you don't want to risk a flight delay or something. We rented a car via priceline from the airport and dropped it off at the cruise terminal. It was super cheap and convenient. You definitely need a car in Fort Lauderdale.
Thanks for the recommendation. Are you abl to drop off the car at the cruise terminal- you don't need to drive it back? Or, did you end up paying for parking (at the cruise terminal) while you were on your cruise?
Great, thanks
Not sure it's worth it to rent a car and pay for this, but we did an everglades fan boat tour while on our way back to FLL airport in Oct and it was really cool!

Yes, you drop it off at the cruise terminal and take a short shuttle ride to the pier. It only costs a little more than same location pickup/dropoff and I htink it's much cheaper and convenient than taxis or other public transportation. We paid $40 (inc fees and taxes). I wouldn't pay to park a rental at the cruise terminal. When our cruise ended, we picked up a car at the cruise terminal and then dropped it off in Miami airport 2 days later (~$35 per day).
Wow, you only paid $40 for a 1-day rental? That's quite the steal! Did you find this on a rental car company's site, or did you say you did it at Priceline (U bid, or were they running a rental car special)? I guess I am a bit confused- then you picked up another car at the cruise terminal when your cruise ended and dropped it off in Miami? Where did you pick up a car at the cruise terminal?
I think I just booked it. You can check the prices on priceline or hotwire. It's called a one way rental. There are car rental places at/near the cruise terminal (I'm assuming Port Everglades). You get off the boat and there are shuttle buses to take you to the car rental place (5 min away). You pick up your rental there. It is the same place where you dropped off your car before the cruise. Maybe I'm not explaining it properly but it is very simple! Here is the location of our rental at the cruise terminal:

Ahh got it- thanks for clarifying...
Hard Rock? I'd skip that. It's west of town and really nothing special. I meet a friend there when I go back home since it's halfway between her house and my parents' but it's always just kind of sad. If you want to gamble, you'll get enough of that on the ship.
Las Olas isn't what it used to be (they tore down the building with my favorite jazz club!), but it still has boutiques and restaurants. Plus it's really close to the port.
I think there's still an all day water taxi pass. That's a good way to see Ft Laud from the water (the best most unique part of the city IMO), instead of paying for the jungle or paddle queen.
Just a side tip, near the cruise terminal there's a large wine/beer discount store. It's by the new publix. I know ships always say not to bring your own alcohol, but I've never had a problem packing a box of wine.
