And it's not even the 13th

Let me apologize in advance for how long this is going to be.

I probably only got about 4 hours of sleep last night. Well at least before my alarm went off.  Either I dismissed my alarm instead of hitting snooze or I hit snooze, then dismissed when it went off again.

I woke up at 7:08 and I have to be at work by 7:40. It takes about 20 minutes to get there. I somehow managed to get out the door by 7:14 after calling Bob to tell him to take out the dog as soon as he got in from work. I didn't pack my lunch but I managed to grab something to eat for breakfast and some water on my way out the door. I made it to school with 6 minutes to spare and I didn't even speed that much.

Class wasn't even in session for an hour when one of my kids has a seizure. Apparenlty the first one he ever had. Scared the crap out of me and the rest of the kids. He was conscious but all he could say was "it hurts" until it passed. I managed to stay calm, send someone to get another adult and ask someone to call the nurse, attend to him, and keep the rest of the class calm.

But as soon as the nurse came and there were other adults there to look after my kids, I excused myself and lost it. Then I had to go back in to find them extra contact info as they were taking my class to another room before the medics got there. Then they made me go sit in the nurse's office and relax because they were worried I had gotten too worked up.

The kids were really good and when I got back to the classroom they asked if I was okay. I overheard one of them say "I've never seen a teacher cry" and they laughed when I told them "Well, since I'm pregnant, sometimes I cry at car commercials."

The rest of the day was calm except for a little girl deciding to slap a boy for no reason and then lie through her teeth about it. I had just finished complimenting them for handling themselves so well through it all.

On the bright side when the ER released the kid, his parents came to pick up his sister and brought him back so he could show the class that he was okay before they went home.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz

  • Yikes. That would scare me too. I talked to my friend a couple hours ago and oddly one of her students had a seizure today too. I am glad he's ok. Do they know what caused it?

For less then ten cents a day, you can feed a hungry child.
  • Poor little guy.  Seizures are scary.  Back in my sorority days, there was a gal that had her first ever grand mal right in the middle of a rush party.  No bueno.

  • They have no idea. He has to follow up with a doctor and go for more tests but he was smiling and fine when he came to get his stuff and tell everyone he was okay. His mom said he was giggling during the MRI. The doctor asked me a bunch of questions on the phone but they don't have any answers yet.

I just hope the parents do a good follow up, since they aren't exactly known for their responsiveness. When the seizure was over and I asked if this had ever happened he said "at home." But the parents said nothing like this has ever happened before. The kid is very withdrawn and I don't know if he had a minor one before if he would've even said something if nobody was there to witness it.

  • Wow- I would have cried too, but I'm a crier. Sounds like you handled it really well and thankfully the boy was ok. How old is he?

  • I've always been a bit of crier, at least in private, but pregnancy crying can get ugly.

He's about 8. I think it was worse that he was conscious since he looked terrified and he told the doctor and his parents he was trying to talk but couldn't. I can't imagine being aware your body is doing that and not being able to do anything about it.

  • that is a huge fear of mine along with drowning, suffocating, being buried alive, crashing into a tractor trailer while driving.... so many things keep me up at night.

  • Oh my goodness.  I wish you could have come home and had a drink after a day like that.
  • Holy moly! I'm glad the little guy is okay. Hope you can relax tonight.

You and me both. As I was leaving one of my co-workers said , "You're allowed to have a little bit of wine, aren't you?"

But seriously, if I screw up my alarm next Friday, I'm just going back to bed.

  • Gah that's terrifying! I'm an after-event crier, too. I'm good through a crisis, but I just fall apart after. That's really cute that the kids were worried.

Poor kid, being awake through it. :( I really hope the parents follow up and get to the bottom of it.

  • Eesh.  Good for you for handling it well.
