Where to eat anniversary dinner in Maui?

I've heard great things about Merriman's and Mama's Fish House. My husband pretty much will eat anything..I on the hand like really like shrimp (grilled/cooked, but not chilled), chicken, and occasionally will eat a steak. Can you all help me out?

Thanks...

Re: Where to eat anniversary dinner in Maui?

  • We went to Mama's Fish House and thought it was good (not mind blowing great- especially for the price).  We did have this one ceviche appetizer that was really good.  There are nice touches like free ice cream for your anniversary.  I will say that there was this one table near us and the lady literally licked her plate clean.  No lie!  She finished her entree and dessert and then used her fork to scrape the sauce off the plate and then she used her finger to scrape what was left and lick it completely clean.  She did this for entree and dessert and then did the same with her H's plate.  My H and I were blown away.  It made for interesting dinner entertainment.  I guess Mama's Fish House was GREAT for her..haha.  If your food tastes are very specific, I would check out the menus online.
  • Merriman's is a great choice.  We ate at the one in Kauai for our anni dinner, it was amazing!  I had a seafood dish and H had some kind of fish, both were utterly yummy...

  • We ate at Mama's Fish House and Sarento's, and of the two, we liked Sarentos better.  Never been to Merriman's.
  • Sarento's look like more to our liking...Thanks..

You're welcome. We're not big seafood eaters, so the hubs got some kind of steak, and I got the spaghetti w/ filet mignon meatballs.  They were both excellent!

  • The ladies on here recommended Merriman's for our splurge meal while on Maui and we had a great experience.

Here's a link to my review of it on my blog:

  • Mama's Fish House gets recommended a lot. We went there on our honeymoon and my husband said it was really good. I on the other hand had one of their cocktails first which was so strong that I was kind of drunk during the dinner and didn't even remember it. Huh?

We also really liked Spago and Sansei Sushi

My husband still talks about Sansei Sushi and we ate there 7 years ago.  I'm a fan of Mama's Fish House - I think it's very romantic.

  • My husband and I are huge Merriman's fans.  Get a table with a view of the sunset - heaven!  Great food and drinks, atmosphere, service; can't fault them.

  • We really liked Kimo's.

  • I'd skip Mama's.  It wasn't bad, but it wasn't up to all the hype, either.  It kind of felt like a tourist trap.

We had both our wedding dinner and 5th anniversary at Spago.  I'd definitely recommend that.  Excellent food and great atmosphere.  I've been to Sarento's on Oahu (same restaurant group), and it's good.  Not the best Italian I've ever had, but one of the better options on the island.

On the other end, I'o and Pacific'o in Lahaina are really good.  Pacific'o is more my personal taste, but you can't go wrong with either.

I have a sushi sansei in walking distance of my apartment, and I can't resist regular treks to get the crab ramen on half price night.  In Honolulu, it's half price Sun and Monday from 530-630.  Not sure if that's true in Kapalua, but it's worth checking out.  While the food is very good, it doesn't quite have the anniversary feel IMO.

  • Agree about Mama's, it was over rated.
