Favorite NYC museum?

DH and I are heading to the city next week and are looking for recommendations on museums. We've been to MMA, MoMA, Natural History and are trying to find something else. Googled online but thought I'd ask for your recommendations.

head over to the NYC board and read the sticky post, tons of recs for the usual favorites as well as some lesser known local favorites. the guggenheim is one of my favorite museums and is just a very cool building. in my ten years in NYC, i never visited the tenement museum (bad cheeky!) but i've heard it is really interesting.

I was going to say the Tenement Museum, too. I've never gone, but it's on my plans for this year. I've heard it's really interesting.

The Frick is really neat, as is the Cloister (although it is a hike -- will you be driving?).

Yeah, the tenement museum is great. Plan ahead, because they sometimes sell out of daily building tours long before the end of the day. We really enjoyed the Museum of Jewish History, if that topic interests you.

Ditto the Tenement museum. I really enjoyed the tour I did there. Ellis Island is also really interesting. The Rubin museum (near Union Sq) has a beautiful collection of Himalayan art, which is something I hadn't seen before. If you're interested in exploring another boro, the Brooklyn Museum has a great African art collection and is right off of several subway lines.

I warmly second the Frick, the Rubin, and the Cloisters, and would like to add the lovely MAD - Museum of Art and Design at Columbus Circle. There are, of course, two more giants: Guggenheim and Whitney; on a smaller scale (and on my personal to-do list) are the Asian Society Museum and the Morgan Library.
