Redefining rape

I was reading this story http://news.yahoo.com/obama-administration-expands-count-rape-victims-165851419.html about the Obama administration expanding the definition of rape, including men, when counting the number of victims. I was surprised the new definition won't change state laws. I'm not familiar with OK laws on rape but I'm assuming it probably reflects the 1929 version. I wonder what the statistics are in OK for male rape victims? You rarely hear about male victims which is sad because you know it happens. How long do you think it will take OK to change to reflect the new definition?

Re: Redefining rape

  • It's about time they changed the definition to include men.  While I have no idea what the statistics are, I'm sure the actual amount of men victimized by other men or women is highly unreported.  Women have so much support in this arena--it's been made clear that no man should EVER force himself on a woman.  I hope Oklahoma and the country in general realizes that we need to make it just as clear for men that it is okay for them to come forward if theyve been victimized by this type of crime as well.

  • This is really interesting.  I had no idea that men weren't included in this.

I can think of a few instances of a man being raped by another man and a report has been made.  I wonder what they consider it then if the definition never included men (maybe just a sexual assault?). And why would they change the definition and not have it affect state or federal laws?
