What is a must see on a day trip to Oahu?

DH and I are visting Maui and we plan to do a day trip to Oahu to visit Pearl Harbor. Is there anything else we must see while there? We are going to buy The Reaveled Book for Maui, should we buy the one for Oahu too, considering we are only going to be there one day?

Thanks!!!

  • I personally would recommend renting a car and heading over to either Kailua or up to Haleiwa, having lunch and checking out the gorgeous beaches. But if you're really interested in history there's also the Cemetery of the Pacific and the Bishop Museum, or if you're a big shopper Ala Moana Mall and Waikiki are pretty hard to beat.

  • We are going to have a car. Not really interested in history but the shopping and beaches sound like a winner...
  • Ditto going to Haleiwa on the North Shore, cute historic beach town - Matsumoto Shave Ice is a must.  Also while there, go to Waimea Bay Beach, a nice huge beach, and snorkel at Shark's Cove.

Or, spend your time in Waikiki.  LOTS of shopping - high end stores at Luxury Row along Kalakaua Avenue, unique shops at Waikiki Beach Walk, souvenirs and local crafts at the International Marketplace, and the Ala Moana Center is a huge open-air mall with everything.  There's also a ton of great restaurants in Waikiki, and of course the beach!

If you like snorkeling and have the time, go to Hanauma Bay.

  • Pearl Harbor took us a whole day; there's a lot to see and I don't think it's a place that should be rushed. Your experience may differ, but it's not a sure thing that you'll have lots of extra time for something else.

If you want to see what the Revealed book has to say, just check out your library's copy, since you'll only be there 24 hours or so.

  • Are you flying to and from Maui just to see pearl harbor?  While it's a short trip, I'd rather save the money and have another day on Maui.  Save the harbor for another trip to Hawaii where you might have to overnight in Honolulu.

In 24 hours, you can't really go to both north shore and hanauma.  They're on opposite ends of the island.  If you go north shore, you can snorkel at shark cove.

  • We'll be on Maui for 7 days and will be using one of those days to visit Pearl Harbor.

We are going to be on Oahu from 8am-8pm. Pear Harbor is our main focus and if we can't get to anything else that will be fine but I figured we would have time to do something else since we are there for 12 hours and didn't want to finish the tour and then have no destination...

  • In 12 hours, with traffic and airport wait time, I can't see planning something else.  Just take a shuttle or bus to Waikiki and call it a day if you have extra time.  While I live in Waikiki, I don't normally recommend people spend precious vacation time here (I just don't understand going to the same restaurants and stores you have in your home town), but in your case, it's really the best fit since you have to make a flight back.  If you do go to Waikiki, at least check out the duke statue and either eat at duke's or get garlic shrimp in the int'l (tourist trap) market.  They used to have a shrimp truck, but I haven't seen it recently, so the storefront will do.

Pearl Harbor and the airport are pretty much collocated, so there's no travel time.  Getting from there to north shore could take an hour, each way.  Going to hanauma could be the same, or longer.  I didn't think Pearl Harbor takes longer than a couple hours, though.  I haven't been yet, but I just can't see it being all day.
