TH and I decided that we need to have something on the schedule to help break up the long period between Christmas and Memorial Day weekend. We want to plan an overnight weekend somewhere. Usually it works best to go on the east side, as we can drop the kids off with my parents. So, I'm thinking 1-2 hours from Flint (can be north, south, or east0 Maybe late March or mid April (after spring break.)
Last year I planned the trip to the Detroit Zoo, dinner in Royal Oak, and the next day we went to the Henry Ford.
During the summer, we went to Great Lakes Crossing, dinner at Somerset, and a play at City Theater the next day.
This December we went to downtown Rochester for their Christmas display and shopping the next day.
Any suggestions on something else to do. We are not casino people, so that is out. I actually wouldn't mind going to a play or comedy show somewhere. I already checked the schedules for Fox, City, and Gem Theater and there are no shows in April. Does the Improve group still perform at City?
Re: Plan a overnight getaway (BnG - need east side input)
Would you be interested in a Pistons or Red Wings game?
Or maybe you could visit Ann Arbor? There are some great restaurants and cute shops downtown. And there is a a comedy club downtown that we visited once (the comedian wasn't great, but we may have just picked a bad night).
My house!!
Just kidding. Gosh I live here and I don't have any ideas for you. I will brainstorm and see if I can come up with anything.
The Tigers will be playing by mid-April.
When you say the Henry Ford, do you mean Greenfield Village?
How about the Detroit Institute of Arts?
I'm asking my super hip "I know Detroit because I live here" friend for you, too.
We did the Ford then, but went to Greenfield with my parents later that summer. That is good for until the kids are about 8 years old and then we will go back.
I'm open to the suburbs too.
Is there anything to do in Port Huron?
There is Cranbrook. I know the have a Natural Science Muesum and an Art Muesuen. They also have a House and Garden, but I din't know if that will be open for the season yet.
And there is Meadowbrook. You can tour the Estate or see a show at the theater. Will the girls be with you? They do a children's theater too. (Some of them are for K-5 and some are for "all ages) It would probably be too early in the season to see anything at the amphitheater though.
I was going to suggest Cranbrook, too.
GVSU, if you want to watch ships, I guess you could go to Port Huron. I'm not sure anything else happens there.
I'm here I'm here! And I got nothing that has not been said already! Bet you're glad you waited for my input!
Hmmmmmm Detroit Opera House? They usually have SOMETHING! Ah yes! http://www.michiganopera.org/ Swan Lake is playing in April! And by then it'll hopefully be nice enough to take a short walk or the people mover to a nice restaurant.
ETA: I'll check back later. The boss is shooing me out of here.
I would definitely do downtown Detroit. There are several nice hotels and a ton of fabulous restaurants. I have a few recs if you end up doing downtown. The former Book Cadillac is now a Westin (or W).
Places like Cliff Bell's have live music (usually kind of jazzy and more low key I think) on weekends if you're into that. The MGM casino has a really awesome spa if you and your H like spa treatments. The casinos also have some pretty good hotel and restaurant space, even if you aren't into gaming.
I second the suggestion of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Midtown also has the Detroit Artist's Market where you can buy work from local artists, but also is a neat gallery space.
