One day in Stockholm

Is this a crazy idea?  We're going to be in Copenhagen in the summer and flights are ridiculously expensive back to the US from CPH.  The cost is nearly half to fly home from Stockholm, but we only have about one extra day available in the itinerary.  Is it worth it to see Stockholm just for a day (possibly day and a half depending on when the train leaves CPH)?

Any recs for must-see/do in Stockholm would be a bonus. :-)  We're not big museum people, like to wander, stay away from major tourist traps, eat and drink.

Re: One day in Stockholm

  • I recommend seeing the Vasa Museum.  The Vasa was a ship that sunk to the bottom of the ocean, and the museum is fascinating.  I also suggest having a smorgasbord in Sweden.  There is a big hotel that offers a really good smorgasboard--I think the name is the Grand Hotel or something like that.  Lots of types of herring and many other goodies.
  • If flights are that much cheaper to return from Stockholm you'd be nuts not to do it, regardless of the amount of time spent seeing the city.

The city center is the main tourist area, and very walkable.  Will you get the "whole Stockholm experience" in one day?  Of course not, but you can see a decent chunk of it, say you've been there and get cheap flights back home.  Win all around!

This is sort of what I was thinking.  I just wasn't sure if it was going to be more hassle to get to the city, pay for a hotel, etc.  We're taking my little brother for his graduation and he's never traveled very far from home, so I figure if nothing else it will be cool for him to get another country/stamp in his passport.  I'm glad to hear it's walkable and we'll be able to see quite a bit.

lujain - thanks for the recs!  My H is already overly excited about the smorgasboard. :-)

  • Hotel breakfasts in all of Scandinavia are amazing.  Stay at a decent hotel just for the breakfast.  It's a huge spread and it's awesome!

Not sure if that's what lujain was referring to (where I come from smorgasboard is a generic term for buffet) but I thought I'd throw that out there.  You won't be disappointed.

Yes yes yes! I agree that the Vasa museum was absolutely fascinating. Must see!

  • I'll also recommend the Vasa Museum - we were in Stockholm in September 2011 and this was one of our favorites!  The changing of the guard at the palace was also really cool (and free), as well as the Lutheran Cathedral near there (can't remember the name right now, but you can't miss it if you get to the palace).

  • Another vote for the Vasa.  DH was reluctant to go and he was in the Navy, but he loved it once we got there.  I'm not sure what he was expecting.  We explored the old part of town after that (took one of the water ferries) over and had a nice lunch and saw the changing of the guard.  The changing of the guard was a bit long, but it was worth it to hear the royal band play Abba and well, the guards do something that looks kind of silly, so, I'd watch it again just for that.  We didn't go into the cathedral, but explored the shops, Nobel Museum, etc...I regret not taking the palace tour there.
  • We had a long weekend in Stockholm a few years ago and loved it. I absolutely agree about the Vasa museum - we aren't museum people at all and we loved it. Walking along the water is really, really pretty as well. I'd definitely go just for the savings in money, but you can see quite a bit in a day.

  • We went to Stockholm a few years ago - we loved the VASA museum, walking around old town Stockholm, walking along the river, changing of the guard, and touring the palace.  My favorite thing was visiting the armory museum which is attached to the palace - they had tons of the queen's and princess' clothing displayed as well as all of the old stagecoaches.  We went around the time Crown Princess Victoria got married which was so special - the whole country was celebrating. It was awesome.
  • Thank you for all of the recs!

I looked at the website for the Vasa, and it looks really cool.  I think we'll put that on the list.  Hopefully we can catch the armory and changing of the guards, too.

  • LOVED Stockholm when we went summer of last year. Yes the Vasa Museum is great and you should do it if you want to check out museums. however i also saw you mention that you arent big museum people and the reality is you wont have THAT much time. Stockholm is great and I recommend Gamla Stan and while its the tourist area, it gives you a great feel for Stockholm and is not too crowded. It has great cobblestone and windy streets and gives you the medieval feel of Old town Stockholm. It will lead you to the Royal Palace for great scenery. The famous street  V?sterl?nggatan will have plenty of yummy places to eat and great places to sit down and get some drinks with great views!
